Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I did see the saddle horn on Shadowfax. I was looking for it after the discussion here though. Ian was holding it at first, then let go and it was obvious. (To those looking.) Oh good. I knew it wasn't my imagination. :)
Did you notice the sword scene where Aragorn tells the boy "This is a good sword." even though it was the same one he discarded in disgust earlier?

Since LCS isn't here right now, I figured I'd carry his water for a minute.......
Did you know that if we continue at our current pace that we will cause this thread to implode sometime in May?

I'm so glad I finally chimed in here! So am I!
However, I will be back home (hmmm can I go so far as refer to this as a return to my Shire?) so I will have lots of OLD friends with whom to discuss the movie.
Believe it or not, this Hobbit Hole IS my Shire. :) You are very fortunate to have friends that enjoy the story as much as you do and do not find you "odd".

Did you know that if we continue at our current pace that we will cause this thread to implode sometime in May? Now why do you have to scaring HoTD like that? There is no spam in this Hole, so that just cannot be! Heheheheheeee....

LOL - yesterday was my day to finish up shopping/wrapping. I set it aside as my first whole day off work and my daughter was still in school so it was perfect. What did I do?
1. Wake up and re-read large portions of TTT
2. Turn on the computer and see what all ya'll had to say about it.
3. Re-read some more after reading your comments.
4. Go to the matinee to see the movie AGAIN.
5. Run by Wal-Mart on the way home and pick up tissue paper and the most important gift - the one for my grama on the way home.
6. Watch FoTR while I hastily wrapped those things I have.
My daughter is getting a trip to the drive-in to see the movie for Christmas - tomorrow night. And maybe Christmas night as well.
Not to worry, I'm not an obcessive individual.

I looked on that sword part. I also paid very close attention there. I couldn't tell that it was the exact same sword but because of the discussion I did receive more impact from the scenes. He throws down the first. They discuss the negative aspects of the people of Rohan being ready for battle. And then Aragorn uses that sword to completely change the boy's confidence in the battle, himself and hope. It was very moving. You know, this is what we're supposed to be doing with OUR kids.

"what in the world are you doin' here at 0205 in the mornin'?"
We were trying to watch the extended edition...it took even longer than usual, since we had to replay parts of it over and over.
For instance the scene with Pippin and Merry dancing and singing on the table in the tavern, and Frodo prancing in cirlces, had to be watched something like 5 times.

This is good. I like this place. I want to come here more often. :-)
I imagine most of my friends still would describe me as a bit "odd." But, several of them are at least Ring-literate. Of course we have the StarWars/StarTrek etc. literate and obsessed there too. But then, I worked in engineering for years. How could it be otherwise.
Most of them are guys though - you know - male people. Not as many of us female people in that field. They don't like it when I go off on the nice attributes of the male characters. It's kind of nice to have some of the other ladies sharing their thoughts on that here. My guy friends get all weird when I start that with them. But, I do it anyway.... because there are some really nice men and elves to look at in the film!

you got it bad, bro...That's true, but it was fun deciphering the last line of the song on the table.
Strangely, I love FOTR even more than I did before, after watching TTT. Will be interested in your take on TTT, since it has lots of battle scenes.

Priceless!

Speaking of swords, and hopefully I haven't missed a discussion on this already, but when will the 'sword reforged', Anduril, arrive? I keep looking at the hilts and the one Aragorn is using (has kind of a fence-post finial shape) is not the one that the Shards of Narsil at Rivendell (a stylized, but hollow circular wedge shape)had. It is an important symbol of his authority in the texts and seems to be missing in the films. Any thought on when PJ will bring it into the spotlight?
To: Wneighbor
I didn't pay attention to the hilt as much as I did to the blade.
The broad side of the blade was etched with distinctive markings that gave it a dull gleam. And it was definitely chipped and scarred on the edges. That is why I noticed the similarity so quickly.
I'll just have to watch it again and look at the hilt next time. :)

Most of them are guys though - you know - male people. That's the way I thought it would be here, but I think the majority of the posters on this thread are women.

I've kind of been wondering if he was going to do anything with the reforging myself. In Rivendell when Boromir was looking at the shards I thought it was weird because in the book Aragorn was carrying the sword with him. I wasn't fully satisfied that the scene in FoTR tied the shards to Aragorn.
So, I was thinking perhaps this was a part of the storyline that was getting skipped over.
Maybe Arwen is going to bring Anduril to him in RoTK...???
To: Lil'freeper
I believe he gets Anduril after Helm's deep, before they journey thru the Paths of the dead...

Hi, Ruthy, I would love to see it with you guys! My wife is still finishing up the end of her term - we are leaving town Sunday, but will be back on Jan. 2.
To: RMDupree
Okay, I'll watch better the next time too. I was looking at the blade myself. Because the blade was scarred and chipped I sort of receive the impression that the store of weapons in Rohan's armory ALL looked like that. But, you could be very correct. They were BOTH dark colored and marked. Many chips in the blade.
Now that I think about it, there was that scene about the same time of a sword sharpening that looked much much better, so that was a misconception on my part about the weapons of Rohan.
Bears looking into further. You and I should go to the matinee this afternoon!!!!
To: Wneighbor
Heheheheeee. We have such a diverse mix in here that it is, in my opinion, the BEST place to be when discussing Tolkien, etc.
Can you imagine the look on my friends' faces when I laugh and when they ask why, I answer: "Nothing unusual, just watching the Dwarves and Elves in the Hobbit Hole bash each other. I'm a Hobbit, so I try not to interfere much."
LOL!! I wonder when they'll call the men in the white coats to take me away once and for all.
To: Lil'freeper
Obviously PJ is waiting until RoTK to introduce the reforged Narsil. I don't know why because it was Narsil that opened the door for Aragorn with Eomer, so I would have thought that it would have been important to have Narsil in TTT.
I believe PJ may be using the introduction of Narsil as a way to bring Arwen back into the storyline if he has her deliver it to Aragorn.
