In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....

enervate \EN-ur-vayt\, verb:

To deprive of nerve, force, or strength; to weaken; to impair the moral powers of.

Etymology: Enervate is from Latin enervatus, from enervo, enervare, to to remove the sinews from, hence to weaken, from e-, ex-, from + nervus , sinew.

that makes sense. i had not thought of that. Latin American studies is the true love of my life. In changing my major from premed freshman year, not only was i considering that Cs were not going to get me into Med school, but also that i would no longer have time for Spanish and LA studies as electives. it was my goal to get a job in the field of LA studies but that just never worked out.

Nao pode fallar Portuguese?

I found Portuguese interesting, but a tough language to grasp. You can get by with Spanish, but it is still different enough to leave you in a pinch with many of the Portuguese-only speakers. That was my experience, anyway.

BTW, lots of Japanese in Peru, too. Their last president was Alberto Fujimora.

She had been beaten in the Primary for re-election. She'll be totally out in January. The TRO against the Blue Angel was lifted and everything just quieted down.

The homeschool murdering mama case has quieted down too. I guess she was really crazy.

After the poor guy was smeared with a rape accusation.

Ah yes. ...

Competed in slide rules back in high in Texas. Was pretty good in the novice (first year) division (couple wins, always placed high) - but was only getting 3rd, 4th, 5th at the vetern levels against better competition. (Wasn't fast enough to get enough points. Good accuracy though, just wasn't fast enough for the 30 minute test.)

So went to the longer (3 hour) science test: and was persistent enough (stubborn enough?, stupid enough ?) to concentrate that long. Eventually won at the district, regional and placed at the Texas state level of competition....Whoop, whoop.

(Nice scholarships from all that - so college and room and board and books and fees and spending money (er, beer and dance money) were all paid for.)

So all that slide rule time in high school in 72-74 earned me enough to buy a HP45 as a sophomore in college - and I haven't used one since.
