I've been to BBQ heaven in Memphis....now I need to know about the rest of the country.....
I need a Freeper list of the best BBQ joints in your respective states. I would prefer that the joints be just that -JUKE JOINTS or the like-not chains. Please explain why you like it...ribs? Chicken? baked beans?

Kansas City BBQ is the best!
Gates, if still in business, Masterpiece (?), Hayward's were the ones I liked when I lived there!
I am sure the names have changed in the last 10 years!

Arthur Bryants in KC and Gates BBQ in KC are some of the best in the country. There are some other good joints in the metro area as well.

So Which one did you go to? Corky's or Rendezvous?

Famous Dave's BBQ. Budding chain restaurant. Has about 60 restaurants around the country. I have tried almost everything on their menu and have loved it all. The ribs are perfect. Slow-smoked, not boiled like some restaurants try to pass off as BBQ. Here's a link: (Note, only works in Internet Explorer I think)

Arthur Bryants in KC The last time I got a plate of barbecue there (if you could call it that), it looked more like a boating accident than barbecue.

I went to Interstate, off highway 61 south of Memphis. Hawkins Grill, A&R and the Cozy Corner.

In Houston, there's a place called Pe'te BBQ. The best cajun bbq I've ever had. It's across the street from Ellington Field where the astronauts fly out of. The inside of the place (an old gas station) has autographed pictures of astronauts from the Apollo days. Whenever I go home, I always try to stop by.

Son, you just need to come to North Carolina. Start in the City of Lexington, and just head east!
They're are just to many to write of here,we have written books on it, had specials on TV, and last weekend we had a BBQ festival in Lexington!

For pork you can't beat Memphis. The other FReepers who recommend other places west of the Mississippi are talking about beef which, pardon the pun, is a totally different animal.

I like your profile...got the "munchies", eh? Well, if you get to Southern Kalifornia, try Doctor Hogalie Wogely in the San Fernando Valley - a hole in the wall with a perennial line around the block.

Joe's BBQ in beautiful downtown Gilbert AZ.
It's a relativly new place, but in a restored brick building, right across the street from the "Liberty Market" that's been in business for 75 years or so.
Joe's has awsome brisket that you can pick up from a take out window on the street. The only bad part is that I moved away from Gilbert and its no longer on my way home from work.
It was even great in the early morning, when we'd go to breakfast at another wonderful establishment called the "Farm House" across the street. Walking into the Farm House, you could smell the wood fires being stoked up so they could smoke the BBQ all day long.
No Liquid Smoke at Joe's. It was the real thing.

Chicken? How could you even bring up yard-bird in a proper barbecue discussion? Anyway, my suggestions are: Laird's Barbecue in Llano, Texas (drive past the over-rated but decent Cooper's Barbecue); Lonestar Barbecue in Brady, Texas; New Zion Missionary Baptist Church Barbecue in Huntsville, Texas (she showed up one day to barbecue meat for her husband who was doing construction at the church, started selling to the other workers, and never left--proceeds go to the church).

Corkys for lunch pulled pork sandwiches and Rendezvous for the dry ribs for dinner. Don't forget "Buntyns" when in Memphis for homestyle cooking. Wednesdays for chicken and dumplings and banana pudding. Northwest Airlines used to serve Corkys barbecue on flights out of MEM.

Oh, geez, I WAS going home for leftovers at lunch. Guess that plan's out the window, and I'll be having "guess what" instead.
