"Breaking News", the South Lost the Civil War. Vanity
self | 9/26/02 | tall_tex

I have been watching Ken Burns, "Civil War Series" again. I do not know why I keep watching and holding out hope that this time we might just win.

My sad announcement, is that we did not win, this time either.

Why did we loose, surely we had God on our side.

Why do the good guys continue to loose, Roy and Dale won, the Lone Ranger and Tonto won.

The Clinton's win, the Dash@@786450897, have and are winning still, and again.

I guess good guys finish last, maybe we should not be such good guys.

But you are naive if you think you would not have a problem with your daughter dating a black man. I'm sorry, but that just wasn't bred into me. I can't, for the life of me, fathom having a problem with who my child dates, simply because of the shade of their skin.

"Though I would agree that slavery was certainly begun in the South for economic purposes"

I don't think you meant this the way it was said. Slavery was not begun in the Southeastern United States. It was begun before history was written. It was ended by Europeon white males in the United States.

"Although the South would have preferred any honourable compromise to the fratricidal war which has taken place, she now accepts in good faith its constitutional results, and receives without reserve the amendment which has already been made to the constitution for the extinction of slavery. This is an event that has long been sought, though in a different way, and by none has it been more earnestly desired than by citizens of Virginia." Gen. R.E.

I have a hard time even convincing my black friends of this. They are so brainwashed into thinking that all white people are inherently racist, that even the direct evidence exhibited by the white friends (including myself) doesn't seem to counter it.

Honestly, the only time I can remember my dad getting really upset at my angelic older brother was when he said the n-word at dinner.

Actually, the direct impetus for secession was the election of Abraham Lincoln.

Well, secession certainly followed on the heels of the election, but there had been plenty of discussion during the previous administration.

I started taping the burn's series and then decided it wasn't worth the it. The first night, he dug into slavery and presented a case for victimology. He fails to address many issues of the time period. His series is nothing new, just a compilation of good music and photography - that's all. TO give him more credit is a disservice to historians and scholars everywhere.

The South didn't lose, we're just re-organizing : )

Unfortunately, in a lot of cases its projection. My best 2 friends from college (they are twins) are black, and they admit that blacks are much more racist then whites. In fact they got a lot of attitude from other blacks for having white friends.

"The racial ideas developed with the settlement and development of the South. But along with these ideas there also developed ideas of freedom and liberty, which were embraced by most Southerners. Yet they viewed blacks as unfit for these new ideas of liberty and freedom. It was already well established that blacks were intended to be subservient to whites, so most people in the South saw little conflict with the ideas of liberty with slavery. I think that if Southerners had not possessed their views of blacks slavery would have been significantly less popular. Certainly the economic system was important- but so was the perception of blacks, especially by those outside of the economy of slavery and slave-supported agriculture."

This is what makes me howl. There was no difference between Northerners and Southerners in the perception of the black race. NONE!

"The North, it seems, have no more objections to slavery than the South have..." John Stuart Mill, 1861.

"The Northern onslaught upon slavery was no more than a piece of specious humbug designed to conceal its desire for economic control of the Southern states." Charles Dickens, 1862.

Cause nice guys finish last.

If you want to get Biblical, you should note that just about every Godly man was viewed as a loser by the world.

The central issue was not "property rights", the issue was "states' rights."

True, but discussions of states' rights were routinely in the context of property rights, i.e., the right to own and dispose of slave property, to transport such property in free states and territories unmolested, and to call upon the federal government to enforce such rights via the Fugitive Slave act.

Agreed about mammoth government, of course, but were the seeds really planted in the 1860's or in the 1930's?

One of the things I wonder about, however, is the validity of the argument that states had the right to become part of our republic, and had the right to leave when it no longer suited them, the nullification theory.

That will be debated forever, of course. Interesting, though, that the Confederacy (if I recall correctly) did not permit secession of any of its member states. Not that the issue ever arose in its short life.

Yeah, lots of race baiting, but the very end tonight almost brought a tear to this cold-hearted, social security-stealing, racist right-winger...

Apparently, in the 1910's they had a veterans' reunion or something at Gettysburg and all these old vets lined up to re-enact Pickett's Charge and after the southerners began marching toward Little Round Top or whatever, the north ran down from the top of the hill and started hugging them and crying and stuff.

Well, it can't be ignored that there are a number of black parents that have problems with their kids dating whites. Hopefully, time will snuff this out on both sides.
