After meeting with other family members at his father's house around the corner, Tom Smart said he returned with other family members to Elizabeth's home. They found the kitchen window open and the screen cut.

Hmmmmmm, I don't remember this.

They went to Charles' house. It sounds like the "family" was already there when Tom stopped there.

Maybe Ed told him they would be going over to the Dad's house?

What do you think?

Did ANY of them speak to Mary Katherine? Where was Mary Katherine during all of this? We have been told that neighbors went into the girls' bedroom to comfort Lois, but there has been no mention of anyone speaking with Mary Katherine.

You posted that the family was present at Charles' house when Tom and family got there.

Maybe MK was taken to the Grandparent's for safe keeping. That makes sense to me.

I remember on a Larry King interview, that the grandparents said that the children were with them at some point.

I am going to check that transcript.

"After meeting with other family members at his father's house around the corner, Tom Smart said he returned with other family members to Elizabeth's home...."

I have to say, I found this strange, too. We have heard all about how friends and neighbors were called in to offer support, to help look for Elizabeth, etc.......I would have certainly thought that the family would have been a part of that. Instead, it seems that they went around the corner to meet at Charles' house before going to Ed's, or at least shortly after arriving at Ed's.

"I do wish I did not have to read so much bickering between people here on the ES Thread, it is really causing me to loose interest in the case."

I wholeheartedly agree! But it is nice to have your input!

"Just making the point that the heart of this case is the eyewitness testimony of Mary K.--not some intricate forensic evidence. Just as you said--it comes down to Mary Katherine."

I couldn't agree more.

That's funny, LE says the key to the case is what Ricci did in the 500-1000 miles in the Jeep and who he left Moul's garage with on Jun 8.

Now I wonder who I'm going to believe on this, the law enforcement agencies and CONSPIRACY ZELOTS, or "the real people who are paying attention, and calling FOUL".

Assuming that what we know about what MK said is what actually happened, that is the only rational explanation I can think of.

I know it doesn't make sense, thank you. :-) At first I thought perhaps she had been barely awakened and had gone back to sleep. Then I read that she had left her bedroom and spotted the gunman somewhere else in the house.

So if she fell asleep, she had to have done it while waiting for the coast to be clear for her to go tell her parents. It was the middle of the night -- maybe sleepiness overtook terror.

I remember the drug rehabilitation comment also, that Ricci hadn't been keeping up on the terms of his probation. I'll do a search on the Salt Lake Tribune site, I think I'm still good there to search. I remember this because Ricci used the outpatient rehabilitation meetings as an alibi, the police checked up, and he hadn't been going for awhile.

I remember a national case about this time where somone told police they had gone to a drug program meeting and the police checked it out and he hadn't attended because I remember wondering how this guy could be stupid enough to say something like this when he should know without a doubt he would get caught in his lie. I can't remember if this was Ricci though. I think it was just brought up on a news show and never appeared in print anywhere and was never mentioned again.

I've known a few drug addicts in my time, and thinking logically was not their strong suit.

University of Utah police have had Edmunds' driver license since they attempted to arrest him April 20 on Tomahawk Drive, which runs behind the nearby Smart home in the Federal Heights neighborhood. Edmunds evaded arrest by fleeing as police conducted a background check.

Questionable Motives

SLC Tribune

Questionable Motives

Concerning the investigation of the Elizabeth Smart case: Acknowledging that every avenue must be investigated, why did The Tribune put such heavy emphasis on the family as suspects, prompting many national media outlets to follow suit?
Is it the most plausible explanation? The police clearly don't think so, despite what unnamed individuals may have told The Tribune. These families have been frank and cooperative and have not sought to protect themselves in doing so. Yet The Tribune skewed that very circumstance, and skewered a family amid the greatest suffering most of us can imagine.
It couldn't be Tom Smart's Deseret News affiliation. Too minor, I would hope. Surely it couldn't be the potential career gains for the reporters who crafted the intriguing arrangement of opinion and conjecture from "unnamed law enforcement sources." Or the institutional gains in selling more papers, and most importantly, getting The Tribune noticed by and widely mentioned in the national media outlets that "largely confirmed" the story. Surely we can hope for better than that. Can't we?
Yet these motives have all crossed my mind. Am I wrong to publish them? I suppose so, mainly because I only have as much on The Trib as The Trib has on these families. I'm told by a highly placed unnamed media source that The New York Times wouldn't touch The Tribune 's allegations. But the media is increasingly carnivorous, and seems to care less and less whether the meat is cooked or raw.
To all the Smarts and Francoms, to Ed and Lois and their children, hang on. Hang on. We are with you, with Elizabeth, and all will be well.

Ricci -- who once shot and wounded a police officer during a burglary -- has spent much of the past 30 years behind bars. Since his first adult conviction for burglary in 1972, he has been convicted of theft, escape from custody, aggravated robbery and attempted murder.
He has escaped or absconded from Utah State Prison twice, the first time in 1978, when he failed to return from a home visit during Easter weekend; and again in 1983, when he subsequently fired a sawed-off shotgun at an officer who interrupted him during the burglary of a Salt Lake City drug store, according to Salt Lake Tribune news stories from the time.

Police investigating Elizabeth Smart's disappearance arrested Ricci on June 14 for allegedly violating that parole by committing an April 4, 2001, burglary, possessing alcohol and failing to complete a treatment program.

"Charles" lives near the former bishop.
