The Guild 9-19-2002 Researchers find suicide rates rise under conservative rule

A study has found that suicide rates in Britain and Australia surged during the last century whenever conservative governments were in power.

University of Sydney researchers analysed suicide figures for New South Wales between 1901 and 1998, and compared them with the prevailing political regime.

When the Liberals or Nationals were in power, men were 17 per cent more likely to commit suicide than when Labor was in Government, while women were 40 per cent likelier to kill themselves.

In Britain, a team from Bristol University has found a similar trend.

Suicide rates were far lower under Labour Governments than under the Conservative Party.

They soared under Margaret Thatcher, who was Conservative Prime Minister from 1979 until 1990.

The researchers at Sydney University say possible factors include conservative parties' traditionally less interventionist approach than Labor on issues like health and welfare, which may cause a sense of exclusion among some people.

It would be funny, wouldn't it, the girls calling Chelsea "darling" and all three of them sloshing champagne and vodka while Saffron looks on in disgust.

Clintons, Lewinsky Seek Legal Fees

WASHINGTON (AP) - Monica Lewinsky, Vernon Jordan and others ensnared in various White House independent counsel investigations have joined former President Clinton and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in seeking taxpayer reimbursement for their legal bills.

The bills could total up to $7.8 million, according to a report in Wednesday's editions of the New York Post. The figures were revealed in court papers unsealed by a special federal appeals court in Washington.

Twenty-seven people involved in various Clinton-related investigations — some of them minor players — have sought reimbursement of their legal expenses, the Post reported. The independent counsel law allows for such reimbursement as long as the probe did not result in the applicant's indictment.

(snip)Lewinsky wants $1.2 million and Clinton pal Jordan has applied for $303,000(snip)

the Clintons said last month they were seeking taxpayer reimbursement for legal bills stemming from the Whitewater investigation. Kendall would not say how much they sought but a required disclosure form filed by Sen. Clinton, D-N.Y., listed outstanding legal bills for the couple of between $1.75 million and $6.5 million.

AAAAAAArrrrrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhh - everybody get ready for the NRCC to call and ask for the "pre-payment of the 2003 membership dues. How much do they pay for these phone banks?

The guy wanted to explain to me how the dims were attacking the President! I was astounded to learn this most shocking development.

Are we well known enough to just tell the solicitors that we are FReepers and probably are more up to speed than anyone?

Good grief.

LOL! This anomaly is probably due to law and order conservatives putting pressure on criminals who do the proper thing and save the state some money.

How very interesting you should mention the fund raising arm of the RNC.

They called a couple of weeks ago and I said ok, I'll send a donation. I get a call Tuesday from the same PAC (senatorial) and they want to know if I would like to donate.

No, I said, I just sent you all some money a few weeks ago. He says, "Yes ma'am, thank you very much, would you like to donate to the blahbitty blah... ???? My response was, HELLO! I just told you I sent you people money two weeks ago, what part of that sentence didn't you understand?

He then proceeded to argue with me. I hung up.

THEN today I get a thingy in the mail telling me that I pledged an amount and please send it as soon as possible.

Oh, they're gettin' a donation alright... of some really choice language on the form that I'll send back to them, this time at their expense.

LOL! Yes! And we take away all their fun, so of course this causes the non-criminals to do themselves in.

Soon we'll rule the world! Mawhahahahaha! *evil laugh*

Blast'em good.

I have learned to NEVER commit to any amount - they can send solicitations all day long and hope that they haven't done anything stupid to keep me from donating.

DC is afloat with cash and they do not do a very good job sharing with the state and lower level candidates. So my main giving will continue to be to the candidates themselves and not to the fat cats in Washington.

Such photos exist, of course. In the past editors just used to can them. But the market is omnivorous now.

We will be looking forward to those photos indeed.

This aggravates me a bit:

A Saudi Arabian man from Pleasant Hills pleaded guilty yesterday and was sentenced to time served on child pornography charges. Abdurrahman Khahil Koshak, 30, was arrested last year by FBI agents who searched his home looking for evidence of terrorism related to the Sept. 11 attacks.

During the search, agents found child pornography on his computer.

Koshak, a former student at the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics, told agents he had once supported Osama bin Laden's principles but did not condone terrorism. The government also presented e-mails he had received indicating he sympathized with bin Laden.

Authorities have said he had no connection with the Sept. 11 attacks. Pittsburgh Post Gazette

Where to start with my many aggravations? First, he lived in an apt complex just a mile from my mother's house. Second, why is he still here? He's not doing any prison time, so ship his perverted sorry rump back to Saudi Arabia! Third, a former aeronautical student? Well, isn't that special! Why do these Osama sympathizers all come get student visas to come here, whether Florida, Pennsylvania or wherever, to learn how to fly. You can't tell me there isn't an aviation school in Saudi Arabia.

If I'm overreacting, please feel free to tell me!
