Rock kills climber on Mount Rainier

ASHFORD -- One climber was killed by a basketball-sized rock and another was injured on Mount Rainier Monday morning, park officials said.

Four climbers were near the base of Disappointment Cleaver at 11,700 feet above Camp Muir when the rock struck one of them, officials said. The other injured climber was not badly hurt.

Spokeswoman Maria Gillett said the climbing party contacted rangers with a cell phone.

The surviving members of the party were on their way down and a helicopter was en route to retrieve the body.
No other details were immediately available.
