Begala: Clinton Didn't Fumble Bin Laden, Bush Did!

Former senior Clinton political advisor turned "Crossfire" cohost Paul Begala said Thursday that he doubted the credibility of reports that his old boss was ever offered a deal from Sudan for Osama bin Laden's extradition to the U.S., insisting instead that it was President Bush who missed the best opportunity to take bin Laden out before the 9-11 attacks.

"I'm very skeptical about that whole (bin Laden offer) story," Begala told radio host Don Imus. "To believe it, you've got to believe that the terrorist-sponsoring regime in Sudan all of a sudden became sort of these Jeffersonian democrats who wanted to help America in the war on terror."

"I think the whole thing's a little specious," the one-time top Clinton aide added, despite his boss' own audiotaped remarks confirming the story as fact. (Click here for audio link)

Begala said that after al Qaeda attacked two U.S. embassies in East Africa in 1998, "Clinton was obsessed with al Qaeda, he was obsessed with bin Laden."

The "Crossfire" cohost said that his old boss had recruited assassination squads from Pakistan and Uzbekistan to kill bin Laden, and he ordered submarines to be ready to launch a follow up attack to the Clinton administration's failed Aug. 20, 1998 cruise missile strike on bin Laden's Khost, Afghanistan encampment.

The ex-Clinton aide suggested instead that it was President Bush who blew the best opportunity to get the al Qaeda terror chief.

"Clinton ordered the Predator, which is a drone, to be armed with Hellfire missiles. And when it was ready , when Bush was president, we didn't use it," he told Imus.

Begala also took a swipe at Bush National Security Advisor Condollezza Rice, telling Imus, "Frankly, I'm told, when Sandy Berger was briefing Condolleeza Rice during the transition, (he) told her to spend more time on bin Laden than anything else."
