Ed was told by High Church Officials to work with the police no matter what skeltons they would find. I have heard this time and time again. I finally got the confromation from an FBI agent. I highly doubt this is true since "High Church Officials" would expect all Church members to "honor, obey and sustain the law" without having to be "told". Let's assume that it was true, hypothetically, this sure flies in the face of all of the Mormon bashers on these threads who are firmly convinced that the Church is behind a massive cover-up.

It may have been more along the lines of reassurance that there would no punitive consequences from the Church, if anything unsavory about any family members came to light in connection with the investigation. An extramarital affair, or homosexual activity, or anything of that sort can be grounds for excommunication, and members of a prominent Mormon family really would worry about that in a situation like this. It would make perfect sense for Church leaders to advise the parents that "the only thing that matters is finding Elizabeth, don't worry about anything else, all will be forgiven".
