Yes it was. Wish I could remember it word for word. Something like, it makes good foder for late night talk shows, but I'll leave details up to the professionals at the DOD.
I'll get the transcript when they post it on msnbc.
Have seen the Thank you Gov. Jeb commerical, like it very much. I hope the Gov.'s people are busy making new ones with McBride and Reno on tape saying this latest election fiasco it Jeb's fault. He didn't spend any money on improvements and how it's his responsibility to run the election. Both points being flat out lies.
MR. RUSSERT: On September 11th, former President Clinton appeared on The David Letterman Show and offered some words of advice. Let me show you what they were about the war:
(Videotape, September 11, 2002):
FORMER PRES. BILL CLINTON: Youre looking at a couple of weeks of bombing, and then Id be astonished if this campaign took more than a week, astonished.
(End videotape)
MR. RUSSERT: Do you agree with that?
SECY POWELL: Oh, Im not going to comment on that. I will let our military authorities and Secretary Rumsfeld, in due course, comment on what the nature of any campaign might be. Were not talking about war right now. Were talking about the declaration of purpose that the president put before the United Nations the other day. He retains his options, and I can assure you that my that colleagues in the Pentagon, who I know very well and I know exactly what theyre doing right now, will put together a plan, if it ever comes to war, that well try to resolve it as quickly and as decisively as possible.
MR. RUSSERT: Ken Adelman, who worked in a former Republican administration, said it would be a cakewalk.
SECY POWELL: You know, there are a lot of people who think combats going to be a cakewalk, but it seems to me youd better let the military leaders who have to actually run this campaign decide how to conduct such a campaign, if such a campaign is necessary.
MR. RUSSERT: One concern that was raised is if we begin to build up for a military operation, would Saddam Hussein try his own pre-emptive strike. Again, heres President Clinton:
(Videotape, September 11, 2002):
MR. CLINTON: But if hes got these stocks of chemical and biological weapons and if he knows hes toast, dont you think hell use what he can and give away what he cant to people who will be using them on us for years to come, so he can have the last laugh?
(End videotape)
MR. RUSSERT: Would we, in effect, put Saddam in a position where he would use his chemical and biological weapons before we had a chance to be ready?
SECY POWELL: These are all hypotheticals which are charming to talk about in late-night talk shows, but I think that a serious show like this morning, we should not just wildly speculate about what he might or might not do. We know what capability he has and you can be sure that all of that has been factored into whatever planning we are doing now. Link
Take that clintoon!
