One more TTT pic... notice Shadowfax being ridden at Liberty... no bridle... that will be neat!
To: ecurbh
The question is:
"Gift" version or not.

I say gift set, because the bookends look cool, and I have not seen the National Geographic special yet. But then, this is me, who pre-ordered it 3 months ago.

Great pics hair!
Can't wait for TTT, I saw a piece about it on the news today, sort of a Harry Potter Vs. LOTR Round II thing.
It's that time of year again....
To: HairOfTheDog
feel free to add me to your ping list, if you might :-)

Ecurbh is really the Ring Ping King and thain of the list! Are you on his list?
To: HairOfTheDog; ecurbh
nope, maybe he will add me.
btw, ecurbh. you need to ping *list_name in order to add the post to the list page. Nothing shows up on the list since March, and I know many posts have been posted. Or maybe you have another ping list name?

You have been added to the list. Welcome!
I mainly include the link as legacy, for finding some of the older posts. There is a newer system, in which you can add the list subscription as a sidebar. Click here to subscribe.

Yes, we switched over the the Topic list system (we have a Hobbit Hole topic)....and probably didn't index any of the posts to the *Tolkien list after that...

Friends that I have talked to who are not readers of the book don't "get" why Frodo had to leave the Fellowship at the end. They don't realize, without the book, that Frodo feared that the ring would ruin all of them eventually, that Boromir was just the first to fall.I thought Frodo covered that when after fleeing Boromir, then takes off the ring, he falls off the seat and Aragorn comes up behind him. Frodo says "It has taken Boromir" and Aragorn asks "Where is the Ring", and moves to help Frodo. Frodo backs away and asks "But can you save me from yourself" Then Aragorn folds the ring into Frodo's hand, telling him he would have gone with him to the end. Aragorn understands Frodo's concerns and is giving Frodo permission to go on his own. That's why Frodo tells Aragorn to take care of Sam because he won't understand.
I guess I understand more because of the books, but I only read them once each before the movie. I haven't read them as much as some of y'all have.

And this is Smeagol and Deagol in the boat. Does TTT go into a more in depth explanation about Smeagol? I don't remember that from TTT, but I'm just reading it the second time through. Maybe it is just for the audience members who have NOT read the books to give a better explanation of how Smeagol became Gollum.

Now that particular scene wasn't in the books, and perhaps makes it seem even more confusing. Aragorn passed the test, and said he would have gone to the end. They couldn't figure out why Frodo would turn that down...
To me it was covered too... but I had to do a lot of explaining to my friends. A lot is said with an expression to me, that went right over their heads. Just a little thing... I am happy to hear about these cool new scenes.
To: SuziQ
I think it is to help develop Gollum... so far he hasn't really even spoken, but during the taming of smeagol, I think we will see flashbacks to his former self. There is a lot of cool stuff they can do with Gollum and I am looking forward to it... showing his "slinker" and "stinker" sides... A nasty broken creature, but deep down inside the memory of an earlier time when he was much like the hobbits.

Woo-hoo!! Nov. 21 can't come soon enough.

Yes it was.... The history of Deagol and Smeagol is spelled out in detail in Chapter 2 (The Shadow of the Past) of the Fellowship of the Ring. (Gandalf telling Frodo)
And there is a scene in a boat between the two. You must re-read this if you haven't recently.
I am absolutely thrilled that this is going to be "flashed back" to in the movie, because it is very important background providing great insight into Gollum.

Hey John! - Long time no see! - Looks very good doesn't it?

I was responding to the Aragorn goodbye scene in the post that began "that particular scene wasn't in the books". Suzi and I were haveing two conversations at once.... That was in reply to her earlier post! - Sorry for the confoooosion!
To: HairOfTheDog
Have - Having.... drop the e, add ing!
To: HairOfTheDog
Yes, it sounds very promising. I hesitated when I saw the "MAJOR SPOILERS" warning at TORn -- for about two seconds! >;-)
