I wanted to tell you all about something our homeschool group did in Texas.

My daughter was a 6th grader, my son was a 1st grader at the time and they needed to have some other kids around them so I started a "Journalism Class".

We met once a week at a local church and I took all the older kids into a classroom, the younger ones went with a couple of other Moms and they had their own fun class.

My students interviewed someone in town each month - our first interview was the Chief of Police. One week we formulated the questions to ask him, then next week was the acutal interview, third week we discussed the answers he gave and how to wrap it all together to write an article. Besides the interview, the kids were encouraged to write anything they wanted to - from articles on Beanie Babies, to their soccer games, to even news from their family. We also highlighted one homeschool family and the kids from that family would write an article about them.

Each month I took all the things that had been "submitted" and typed up a newsletter - it was complete with pictures and lots of color! It usually ended up being about 7 pages long and I printed it out for each family. We also sent a complete copy to whomever we had interviewed, along with a thank you note for his or her time.

We opened a lot of eyes in that town to the benefits of being homeschooled - we also received lots of comments regarding the maturity and manners of our kids.

We had a great time too
