Yes. And even sadder, many addicts are legal addicts, people who are legally prescribed narcotic pain medicines over and over. Such a thing can make a contributing member of society into a fodder for criminal courts.

"My dr prescribed it for me, therefore it is OK" was a common comment. And then I would have customers who would worry over the 10 Percocet pills their dentist gave them after a difficult procedure, worried that they would get addicted. I've done a fair amount of study in this area of addiction. There are many components to addiction, we would tell people that addiction to most narcotics would take place over a period of time, taking the drugs daily and upping the dosage to get that first initial "rush", which sometimes graduated to doctor shopping, forgeries, etc. I don't wish to get into a legalize all drugs vs don't legalize all drugs, but I have see the human cost drugs and alcohol take upon individuals and their families. And it is tragic.
