The problem with your analysis is that it assumes the milkman was correct i.e. it was a Nissan. It is more than likely it was Edmunds Saturn which did have stolen 266 plates at one point in time.

IMO David Smart is referring to the speculation about the family that was going on at that time. He felt that the abductor was a non-family member and that it may have been hindering the investigation to have the media playing this angle up.

Jolly, I saw the milkman interviewed on TV and he said there was no way it was Edmunds, it was a guy much smaller matching the description of the kidnapper, short dark hair, WHITE BASEBALL HAT. He had the numbers 266 right but he had two possible combinations for the letters and neither one was in the DMV database. I could find them if it's relevant, they are on Brigette's news website. Edmunds car had 266 then 3 more different letters, quite unlike either of the two combinations the milkman saw. I'm not sure they got Edmunds plate from the DMV database either. I know I saw a man interviewed that lived in the neighborhood Edmunds was parking up to about a week after the kidnapping. His wife was really bothered by Edmunds living in his car there and the man went out and photographed his car and took a closeup of his license plate and gave it to LE. I think the phony 266 license plates are a possible tie between Edmunds and the kidnapper if they in fact were separate letters with same prefix 266, and this more than anything could explain why LE wanted to talk to Edmunds.
It always amazes me when I see someone who expresses themselves as well as you do S-G take such cheap shots at Moul.
