You are so right about Daley....when he walked in, people took notice, he really did carry an air of authority about him...
My dad used to make fun of him tho...when Daley got mad, he used to turn beet red, and had that big fat face, with jowls for cheeks...
My dad would watch Daley blow off steam on TV, and then dad would sit there and imitate him, trying to make himself turn red, and shake his cheeks like Daley did...
I remember well, that convention, and how it must have looked on TV, to people who lived outside of Chicago....it really did make the whole city look horrible, and it was so sad for us, because it was a city we had loved, and were proud of...
But those radicals were just totally out of control...throwing bags of urine and feces on the police and doing everything they could to hurt and intimidate the police...it really was quite awful...

The cops got so set up by Rubin and Hayden and Dellinger, and going after an old bull like Daley seemed dumb.That vitalis haircut, thin tie and shiny black suit made him seem from another generation, but he had no choice after a while.He was more like a longtime union boss than a Mayor.
