The following is from a Fred on evertyhing column..
The bold added by me

(6) In democracies, prosecution of war depends on hiding the nature of war. On the History Channel we endlessly see the bombers of WWII flying over Europe, to stirring music, amid clouds pocked with flak, turrets blazing at incoming Messerschmitts. Bombs fall, flash-flash-flash, across the remote city below. It's an adrenal rush, exciting, and calls to something deep in the audience. You don't see little Hans, far below and four years old, screaming because something wet and messy is oozing from Mommy's head and her eyes are funny and the fire is getting closer and why doesn't someone help him? Nor do you see the turret gunner with his intestines hanging out like greasy rope and blood pooling in low spots. The anger such observations arouse in many military men is a dead giveaway of their discomfort. Governments know that if people saw much of this, they might not fight.

That article was one of the best things Fred has ever written...Now wonder no longer why habs says I'm a sour, hateful person...Just perhaps after reading and thinking a little on the article you all just might understand a little bit....

Yes, I know I'm a sick pup.. that's what my friends liked about me.
"All twisted and nowhere to go."
The Sebum look great.. and a little close to the Lobelia in flower shape. Lobelia only has one stamen/ pistel shoot, though.
"Course, it's better to say, "My best friend" than to say "My step-daughter" considering we were only six years apart in age, and I'd known her before meeting her mother. Which brings me to another prank we two delinquents pulled in the mall...

We were by the food court in the Galleria at Crystal run mall by what was then World of Science (OniedaM will know where this is..) And I was being all fatherly like. During a lull in the conversation, as twisted and insane as it was, a 14 or 15 year old girl wanders over....
She's dressed in this hideously short dress, green eyeshadow, and green shirt. And she's hitting on me.
Well, Laura get's all P.O'd because I am married (To her mother) and don't need a jailbait punk kid bothering me. So she sweetly turns to this poor unsupecting girl and asks:
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MY FATHER?!"

I don't think I've ever seen anyone turn pale and run that fast before. Nor have I ever been stared at by passers-by like that before. Tickled me pink and humored my wickedness, to say the least. The oddness of the situation just lent itself to jokes like that.

Loddy, loved the pic of the ladies looking for a perfect gent to come along....almost reminds me of some scenes, I have seen while working in nursing homes...of course the ladies always outnumber the gents, in those situations...

We ladies live longer than the gents, on average...in the nursing home, there were often certain ladies, who paired up with certain gents, and even in the nursing home, we would once in a while, find them, in odd places, in compromising situations....

Sometimes one spouse would be in the nursing home, and the other spouse would be on the outside...but sometimes when one party came to visit their spouse, again, compromising situations were sometimes happened upon...

There is a good reason, for always knocking on a nursing home residents door, and announcing you intention to enter...

Whenever a new gent would come into the nursing home, often the ladies would be craning their necks, trying to get a good look at the 'new guy'...wheelchairs, walkers, etc, would be in tow, as the ladies were looking for 'Mr. Right', even at their advanced age...

It was fun to watch them, and good to realize that in spite of physical debilitations, and decreasing mental faculties, gents and ladies getting together, for recreation, was still alive and well...

I always enjoy reading Fred, as he is just right upfront about what he believes....sometimes I agree with him, sometimes not...but hes always a good read, plainspoken, and just gives us lots to think about...

I think he is right, somewhat about why our men go into the military...my dad originally joined the army, to get out of the east coast area where he was living, and to learn a good trade...he went into the army at the end of 1940, and indeed learned to become an airplane mechanic, and eventually became a navigator on the planes..or course, at the end of 1941, Pearl Harbor had happened, and we were off to war...dad learned that one of his very best friends, went down on the Arizona...broke his heart....

So, I do suppose that if he was not already in the army, he would have enlisted right away, enraged about Pearl Harbor, made all the more personal by the loss of his good friend...asnd he was pleased to be on planes that were involved in the Japanese theatre, as he felt he was personally avenging his friend...

My hubby on the other hand, was already in the National Guard, when I met him, and into our first year of marriage...he initially spent 7yrs in the reserves...he got out, but then six years later enlisted in the regular active army....by that time we had our two boys...

Mine and my hubbys friends and family wondered why he would do such a thing at 34yrs of age....putting himself through Airborne School and passing that school, was quite a feat for someone his age...when people asked him why he did that, his only response, was that he felt being in the army, was the best way he could insure his boys would live in a safe country...perhaps not a patriotic reason, but it was his reason...it was his own way, to live with himself, that he was protecting his family, by being in the army...

He left the active army after 9yrs.(the reasons are too long and complicated to go into)...but now he had already 7yrs reserves and 9yrs full time...and he wanted that to count for something....so 3yrs after leaving the full time active army, he went again into the reserves, ,and spent about another 11yrs there...insuring him of getting a military pension, at age 60....would that be a greedy reason? I dont think so...he wanted to make sure that he and I would have enough money for our retirement...and he wanted something to show for his military years...

So he had different reasons for going into the military, at different times in his life, but he was proud to serve, and he says he is forever glad that he gave as much time as he did to the military...it was an wonderful experience for the family also, and we had great pride in BigDom for what he was willing to do...

His main reasons for being the military, may not have been what one would call 'patriotic', yet in the end of it all, he feels that he did support his country in a 'patriotic' manner...

Well, the rain stopped, but it sure rained hard for the 10 minutes or so that it was raining....its always surprising to me, how quickly the lawns come back after just a few hard rains...

But the thunder is still going on, so maybe more rain is on the way...this sure is odd weather down here...thunder, two days in a row, is really odd...

Good morning everyone.

A most interesting link today Captain. Thanks.

For the occasional visitor, John Robinson has thoughtfully provided a Dimensional Doorway link on FR's splash page. Scroll down a bit, and it's right there with some of the other daily threads.

Hi Westy, thanks for posting the article. My father served in the Navy in WWII. We were brought up to respect the military. We owe our freedom in this country to the military, and I am grateful to them.

Everything I've ever seen on the History Channel regarding the B-17 underscored the dangers associated with the plane and the bravery of the men who served in them.

At work I have a Successories-type poster showing a B-17 flying in the foreground with a F-16 flying in the background. It is captioned: "Youth and Skill are no Match for Old Age and Treachery."
