Actually, it's quite possible this brain stem hemorrhage was indeed spontaneous. A spontaneous brain stem bleed is rare but does occur and includes not only horrible headaches, but deep breathing (pontine breathing). I doubt this bleed was caused by external blows. The sort of brain bleed caused by being beaten would be most likely under the skull, not at the base of it.
