DALLAS -- Businessman Robert H. Dedman, who built a multibillion-dollar empire of private businesses and country clubs, died at his home here Tuesday.
An official cause of death was not disclosed, but police said it appeared to be a heart attack. Dedman, 76, had been in poor health.
Dedman founded ClubCorp International in 1957 with a single golf and country club in North Dallas and expanded it to 210 golf courses, country clubs and resorts worldwide.
According to Forbes Magazine, he ranked among the 400 wealthiest people in the world, with a personal worth of $1.2 billion.
He was known as much for his philanthropy as his business success. Dedman once said that his goal was to make enough money to enable him to give away $1 million a year....
