That was part of how they rejuvenated the working class of England.
And over half the reason they (the Brits) kept with capitalism until the mid twentieth century, rather than become early commie converts.

Yes, and they got the idea from Martin Luther, who did the same. When he was asked if it was apropriate, Luther said he didn't know why the Devil should have all the good tunes.
Luther wrote the words to "Ein Fest Burg" (A Mighty Fortress is Our God) but the tune is an old beer hall quaffing song.
Some of the current Methodists have lost touch with their origins and gotten really prissy.
