I still want to know why the FBI was involved from Day 1. The reason they got involved so quickly with Elizabeth Smart case is because police thought she could have been taken across state line, thereby requiring FBI. Who asked for the Feds? I am sure they were not justing driving thru the neighborhood and noticed some activity on the Van Dam's street and stopped to see if they could help.
Good point, Knut. Could they have been called by the same person who decided not to test the unknown fingerprints and dna in the VD's house?
Could it be the same person who is yanking Mudd's chain about sequestration?
Could it be the same person who said go after DW and no one else?
Just asking.....

I've wondered, since it was reported that one of the detectives asked Denise, if PDVD was some kind of a spy, if steering of the investigation, away from the VD's, wasn't more the result of a highly placed Federal source, rather than local LE, as some here have speculated. Possibly FBI, CIA, or NSA and possibly someone closely associated with the VD's social circles.
I've never brought it up, because, as good a movie plot as it might make, I'm not convinced of its actual likelihood, myself. But, if it were somehow to be the case, it would account for both the bizarre (IMO) spy question - posed to Denise - and the very early interest shown by FBI.
