In the Beesley case, the Police were fortunate enough to have someone that told them well in advance of Campbells' plan, so they were able to prepare. They cut the guy a huge break, as a result of his co-operation with them. The man that spilled the beans, Moll, I believe, was not only disabled but the articles say he was 'slow'.

I would imagine that any Police force could put on a good show, given the script of the crime in advance.

I'm not saying that SLC Police are bad. I'm sure they are much like any other police force, just more politically bent towards the Mormon church because it's influence is so great in SLC. I've read that 70% of SLC is Mormon. Bias. The church indirectly pays their paychecks, so of course there would be an influence.

Furthermore, I think they do suspect something is wrong witin the Smart family, extended or otherwise. I'm sure that within the SLC Police force, there are different opinions on that, but there were articles about the subject.
(suspected family tie to kidnapping).

Wrong. SLC is 45% Mormon. The state of Utah is about 67% Mormon. One can't check religious affiliation in jobs, but I have heard on good authority that the SLPD mirrors the population of SLC.

Whatever gave you this idea? When I was a very small boy there was a real law and order police chief in Salt Lake who was also a well known Mormon. The press hounded him out of office. Anyone in Salt Lake City that ran on a platform that openly supported the Mormon church would have absolutely no chance of getting elected. I'm not trying to suggest that the church has no influence. Any large religious organization would, no matter where you were in America. From what I can see their influence is mainly in the area's of keeping pornography and such influences out of the city. I might add that they are not completely successful in this either.
