It's a movie. Of course it's phony. LOL
I've never been on a jury. I've only been called once, and they "cancelled out" - change of venue.
I can't follow your logic on what the jury can/cannot do . It appears that the jury in that "case" wasn't sequestered. Why couldn't Fonda get his own knife?
Do you think that juries don't talk about their own ideas in the jury room? Who's there to "slap their wrists" if they do?
That's like expecting a non-sequestered jury to follow the judge's instructions, and not discuss the case with anyone, or follow it on TV...Oh oh. ;-)

Juries are instructed, by law, NOT to go out and do their own research. That's why Fonda, as a real juror, couldn't bring in extraneous material. The other jurors would report such actions to the judge.
Juries cannot go out on their own and visit the crime scene, etc., it's the law.
They cannot recreate their own version of said crime, as they did in the movie. The "law" again.

They do, but always within the testimony and evidence.

Your co-jurors will send a note to the judge, "jury tainted" -- mistrial. Some other citizen gets to do what you failed to do.
