When I was growing up in Chicago, the little store, in our neighborhood was just one block away....it was run by 'Mike', an Italian butcher, who ran his own little cornerstore, and always had a wondeful meat selection, him being a butcher by trade...
Mike, was a full blooded Italian, married to a little Italian lady, ,and they had two boys, Michael, their firstborn, and then little Anthony....Mikes special Italian sausage was to die for...
If you wanted Italian Sausage from Mike, you had to get your order in a few days ahead of time...he made up the sausages fresh for you, just before you got to the store...he had mild sausage and hot sausage...
In our house, hot sausage was always ordered, and it was out of this world...but one time, we all sat down to our Italian Sausage dinner, and everyone dug in, and the conversation at the table, was nothing but slurps and ooohs and aaahs over the sausage....
But as the eating progressed, everyone began to sweat profusely, and our tongues were on fire...that sausage, that one time, was almost toooo hot....we could barely finish it, it was so 'onfire' for all of us...and thats saying something, as even my dad, who loved all his foods fiery, was having a hard time of it...
After that meal, everyone had to have a cool wash cloth applied to their foreheads, for we all felt as if we were burning up...and we all drank tons of water, so the one bathroom was in constant use...
Later on, we laughed about it, my dad saying, he thought Mike was sampling too much Italian wine, and got tipsy, and probably seasoned the meat two or three times, instead of his just one initial time...
We never fogot Mike, and his really hot Italian sausage...
Eventually Mike and his family moved to the suburbs of Chicago, and we sure did miss his specially prepared Italian Sausage....
