Original plans called for construction with Texas limestone. But following laying of the cornerstone on March 2, 1885, doubt arose concerning the uniform quality of limestone from then-available quarries. In a fortunate result, owners of Granite Mountain at Marble Falls in Burnet County offered building stone, free of charge, to the state. The structure was completed with the superb pink granite that makes the capitol so distinctive.
A four-story, underground extension is connected to the capitol and to four adjacent state buildings by pedestrian tunnels. It was dedicated on May 16, 1888, and occupied in September of that year. Covering 2.25 acres of ground with some 8.5 acres of floor space, the building was said to be the seventh largest in the world at the time of its construction. A four-story, 650,000-square-foot underground extension was added in 1993. Major renovation of the capitol was completed in 1995. It is the third tallest state capitol in the U.S., measuring 302.64 feet from the oval walk at the south entrance to the tip of the star in the Goddess of Liberty's hand at the top of the dome.
Thay there, fella!
STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Bill Clinton didn't win the celebrity golf tournament, but at least he was the best player in his threesome Sunday outside the Swedish capital.
The former U.S. President, admittedly jet-lagged after flying from the United States for a speaking engagement in Sweden, finished the 18 holes eight shots over his listed handicap of 14.0 in the World Celebrity Golf event. [Is that the same as 22 over par? Timeout? Anyone?]
Clinton could have posted a much better score, but for a cold putter. [Woulda, coulda, shoulda] After missing birdie putts on the 11th and 17th holes, Clinton hit a 7-iron over a pond and onto the green, about 5 meters (yards) behind the hole on the short par-3, 17th as the big gallery roared. His putt, however, on the tricky, undulated green went just wide, but he tapped in for par as yet another rain shower moved past the golf course.
"I was terrible, but I love the game," Clinton told the Associated Press. "I didn't make any putts. I made some great shots, but had eight three-putt greens.
"I used to play once a week when I was president, but I don't play so much any more, mostly because I travel. I felt jet-lagged today." rest of AP story.
Of course, he was in Stockholm for one of his big bucks speaking engagements, this one for Fujitsu Siemens Computers. Here's a little bit about his speech:
STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Former U.S. President Bill Clinton on Saturday said the United States should raise its foreign aid budget and increase its commitment to international cooperation.
Speaking to a celebrity crowd of business leaders and sports stars in Stockholm, Clinton said his country, no longer burdened by Cold War military spending in Europe and Japan, can afford to give more to the world's poor. [Uh, Bill, we're at war and have a few pressing obligations in that department ...]
"We're dead last among all the countries of the world in the percentage of our income we give to foreign assistance," he said. "We have to pick up our fair share."
Clinton said the United States should increase its commitment to international institutions, even if they're not "perfect" from an American perspective.
"If you're in a business, a friendship or a marriage and you don't control it all, you will never believe it's perfect. You enter all kinds of compacts because you believe your life will be richer and better and fuller on balance if you commit yourself to institutional cooperation of all kinds," he said. rest of story.
Then, years later when I was pregnant with our fourth child, not feeling very attractive, and was wearing a pink maternity dress (a garage sale item), a friend said "You look great! Pink is a wonderful color for you."
I have loved pink ever since that moment! :o)
Good idea. I sent her a check, but have many nice outfits I could send if her size is same as mine. Do you know her size?
