Lake Ontario, and this area mostly, has a terrible problem with algae and its because of the zebra mussel that eats and filters the water so much that sunlight penetrates so deeply now that algae grows at a rate it never did.And then it begins to float to the surface in enormous great lily pads.It truly looks like a oil slick and clings to the shoreline, then begins to stink.And does it stink!!It stays all summer amd the Province now has to hire crews to scrape the scum off the shorline and haul it away.
So, when the water is high and clear like it is now, then the algae is just growing at a fever pitch down below.
