Welcome to the USS George Washington

The USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) is a nuclear powered aircraft carrier built by the Newport News Shipbuilding Company of Newport News, Virginia. The keel was laid on August 25, 1986 and the ship was commissioned on July 4, 1992. Two nuclear reactors are used for propulsion (the ship is capable of steaming more than one million miles before refueling) turning 4 five bladed screws that weigh 66,220 pounds each. The GW can travel at speeds over thirty knots and is 1,094 feet long, 257 feet wide and has a height equal to a twenty-four story building (244 feet). The ship can accommodate approximately 80 aircraft and has a flight deck 4.5 acres in size, using four elevators that are 3,880 square feet each to move planes between the flight deck and the hangar bay. With a combat load, the GW displaces almost 97,000 tons and carries over 6,000 crew members. It can distill 400,000 gallons of water and serves 18,000 meals per day. There are over 2,500 compartments on board requiring 2,520 tons of air conditioning capacity (enough to cool over 2,000 homes). The ship uses two anchors that weigh 30 tons each, with each link of the anchor chain weighing 360 pounds.

Here are a few of the statistics that reflect the amount of time and effort that go into running the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73).

In an average month:
Combat Systems Department processes more than 400,000 e-mail messages (2.4 million during a six month deployment) and operates over 1400 computers on 19 Local Area Networks.

A flight deck officer launches an aircraft from Carrier Air Wing Seventeen (CVW 17) as other flight deck sailors look on.

An F/A-18 Hornet from the Fighter Attack Squadron Eight One (VFA 81) Rampagers prepares to launch

Posted by Teacup from last thread

Good evening all. Thank you all so much for your prayers and kinds thoughts. No baby yet. It's Tuesday June 25, 7PM.

Will keep you all posted. This is the first time I've been on FR today. I've been busy with the other 3 grandkids and waiting by the phone.

I would like to say this. I don't think I disagree with the father's right to see his children. That is not the issue here right now. The parents can argue the custody issue once they get into court. I guess some on another thread were arguing father's rights VS mother's right. God bless us Freepers. We love to argue for any issues, LOL.

The issue is the save return of this 2 year old. Let's stay focused and let us not stop praying for Billy.

On behalf of myself and my family, we would like to say thank you to all of you who have decided to help my daughter bring Billy home.

We are deeply grateful. I hope this is all over soon and we can all get some relief. If any of you have my email or phone number, please call. It's OK. I'd love to hear from someone other than "He's touching me!" Or "It's my turn to sit up front grandma!" Or "Do you have a jar so that I can catch a lizard?"

God bless you all. Lodwick, Carolina, all, thank you for all that you are doing. You are all Angels, my friend.

Oh yeah, after all of this is over, I will be taking up a collection for Botox injections, LOL,LOL,LOL, Just kidding.

T/C

Thanks for the fresh thread and the good information.
I'll refrain from posting any more of the X-Gal's pics.
That puppy was HUGE!

A tremendous evening is wished for everyone.

Thoughts and prayers continue for little Billy.
Please God, bring him safely home. Amen

That USS Washington is one huge ship! I am trying to wrap my mind around its dimensions.....a 4.5 acre flight deck! I have 4.17 acres here, and I still can't envision a ship that large. And ONE Link of its anchor chain weighing 360 lbs. Whew. And being able to travel one million miles w/o refueling. Double whew!

I am trying to wrap my mind around its dimensions

When I read the dimensions my eyes glaze over. I still don't understand how it floats even though poor Mr. Betty has explained it over and over. It makes sense to me, just seems impossible when you see how big it is.

Are you guys going to give us an update on Ann Coulter's appearance tomorrow on the "Today" show? I have an appt and will miss it. Would make for an interesting, if short, live thread, considering her alleged remarks about Katie and Mattie boy's politics and the prejudicial way they "read" the news.

Yes, there's lots of good stuff over there. Here's a good story by Deborah Orin:

THEY MUST DUMP YASSER

President Bush yesterday bluntly told the Palestinian people they can have their own state within three years - but only if they dump Yasser Arafat.

"I call on the Palestinian people to elect new leaders - leaders not compromised by terror," Bush said, making it clear he meant Arafat, although he pointedly did not mention him by name. [snip]

[snip] Bush also called on Israel to stop settlement activities and withdraw its forces from the West Bank and Gaza to where they were before Sept. 28, 2000, the day the Palestinian uprising broke out. But the president said Israel would have to do so only "as we make progress toward security," and didn't set a specific deadline.

Unlike Bill Clinton, Bush didn't try to mediate borders, the future of Jerusalem or Palestinian refugees, saying these are all issues to be "negotiated between the parties" after Arafat is gone.[snip]

[snip] Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) - who once made headlines by kissing Arafat's wife after Suha Arafat had just given a poisonous anti-Israel speech - agreed that Arafat must go, saying he has "encouraged" terrorism. Way to be tough hilly!

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) also praised the speech, saying, "Most Israelis and most Americans have nothing against a Palestinian state, provided the violence ends."

Bush ended his speech by quoting the Bible: "I have set before you life and death. Therefore, choose life."

It's a long one. Personally I wish we would turn Arafat and his buddies into dust, but that's why I'm not president. :-) God bless President Bush.

an interesting, if short, live thread

I won't be back from cheese wagon duty until 7:15, hope Ann's not up first. I can make it first thing (5:30am just look on your comment page for it) and ping it to everyone. Should be fun after what I just saw on H & C!

Yep, I caught it. Alan was a chump with his closing attack - I'm glad Ann responded. And begging forgiveness to all, but Sean Hannity is a lap dog. Just once I wish he wouldn't fall all over himself praising a conservative - it totally takes away from his interview.

H&C just brought Ann back for more and she did a good job keeping Colmes on his toes.

Just once, I'd like to see Ann go at it with a liberal for a solid hour's worth of television. She's actually quite effective at point-counterpoint but you'd never know it because she only gets a few minutes to talk on an interview show - and the host is only looking for hyperbolic remarks.

I like Ann because she has the ability to take a laser-like fixation on an issue and she fights back - there's none of that "Well, Alan, you're a friend of mine, but I don't think you're being fair . . ." crapola (like we got from Dole when he was alive on the national scene and like we get from Hatch every time he's on with a liberal. No wonder nothing ever gets done in Washington - they're all too busy being "friends.").

I love it that she fights back by holding her line & advancing her point of view, rather than giving in just to "be nice."

You're absouletly right about Ann. The perky Katie doesn't have any idea what's she's in store for. Should be velly, velly interesting!

Uh-oh! Maddona's not makin' the cut!

Madonna's camp is quashing rumors that Guy Ritchie nixed nude scenes in their cinematic collaboration "Swept Away" because her body didn't make the cut. Sources say editor Eddie Hamilton was overheard at a party mouthing off that Ritchie snipped the scenes of his wife because they "weren't too flattering," Britain's Sunday People says.

"They leave absolutely nothing to the imagination," Hamilton is quoted as saying. "We took loads of footage of Madonna completely starkers, but after seeing it, Guy said, 'No way!' They both felt the shots didn't make Madonna look too good — although they'll probably crop up on the Internet in a few months."

Madonna's rep Liz Rosenberg scoffed at the suggestion that the 43-year-old star — whose 1992 photo book, "Sex," displayed every inch of her naked form — has lost her shape. "Say what you want about Madonna, but you can't say she doesn't have a fabulous body," Rosenberg said. "I don't think Guy has complaints about her body." Only because he knows she'll smack him into next week!
