This a nice, sweet story from the draft yesterday. It's about the Habs 1st pick, a kid named Chris Higgins, who goes to Yale and is from Long Island.I saw his reaction and his parents yesterday on TV and the mother was crying her eyes out and the father jumping up and down in the stands.Read on and you'll see why it meant so much for them both :-)

"TORONTO -- It's something most of us can only imagine, the emotions a father feels hearing his son's name called at the NHL draft, seeing him walk to the podium and slip the sweater of the family's favourite NHL team over his head.

Bobby Higgins felt those emotions yesterday and they were even more intense given Higgins is a captain in the New York City Fire Department and, well, moments like yesterday's are appreciated even more these days.

"This is beyond a dream," said Higgins after seeing son Christopher, a centre at Yale University, drafted 14th overall by the Montreal Canadiens yesterday.

"To be sitting here and have your boy taken in the first round ... I wouldn't even dream it would be Montreal because I didn't want to jeopardize his chances."

Bobby Higgins wasn't on duty when the planes slammed into the World Trade Center, "but I was in there that afternoon.

"Things will never be the same. My wife and I were going to fly up here, but I said no. We put everybody in the car so he could share this with his brothers and sisters.

"That's part of what's changed. You want to enjoy everything, every moment with your family."

The elder Higgins' love affair with the Habs started years ago when he got a table hockey game and one of the teams was the Canadiens. A Habs sweater followed after that. On Friday, he received a Canadiens key chain from the Hockey Hall of Fame and he kept it in his pocket yesterday "like a rabbit's foot."

oh you're sooooo right. I just love true stories.. Family stories.. I really don't have many memories of the family in the live sense.. I was the youngest, and everything seemed to happen before my time.

I have family in England that I've never met, and even family in Gloucester, Ma. that I don't know. I knew all my Aunts and Uncles on my mothers side, and they were all hot sh!its.. My fathers side was a brother and sister only. She was a riot, and he was a pain in the ass, along with his wife. Very wealthy and very cheap and greedy..

I have very faint memories of my fathers mother. She was an old crone.. lol, and I remember her always sitting in a chair by my Mom's stove to stay warm....
I will have to delve into my memories..

I have done my civic duty and burned the witch. Sada will be free
of witches for another year. We had music, fireworks ,sardinas and vino

Next year I will be the witch-finder-in-chief it is a tough job looking for the witch
mark but someone has to do it. Of course, for such an important job they did not
want and lecher and everyone knows that I am "Pure, pure, pure.", as I swore
before the Lord of Truth and the names of the forty-two gods.

Well, your Cousin Johhny story is too amazing in its own right. Good grief.
I'll have to sleep on that one. ;-)

A - it's good to know that you guys won't be burnt to a crisp on this particular fire! Thank the Lord.
Your thoughts on the Marion/Oscar affair are interesting, as I knew they would be.
I'm trying to figger out the relationship between happiness and freedom in a relationship. This is reminding me again of Larry McMurtry's novel Lonesome Dove.

Time to get Mr.Grill heating for our burnt dinner. bbl Keep having fun. JL

For some reason, I have a remarkable memory for family happenings...I dont know why it is...many family members will call me up, wanting to know this or that fact...I can remember 30 yrs ago, events that took place, who was there, who wore what, who said what, what we had for dinner, etc. etc....

Also my dad was a tremendous talker, and often told us over and over again, all the family stories...often when dad wanted to go fishing, he would pack us all up, with the tent, and we would spend the weekends fishing and camping, and cooking out...

And always the campfire...thats always when we asked dad to tell us about the family...and he spun his stories, and we were really enthralled with the whole thing...of course, having such lively and odd family members is what actually made the stories so grand...

But with my really good memory for all family happenings, and having dads stories firmly burned into my mind, I just am able to somehow keep my weird old family alive...

When I call my aunt Helen(my dads sister) down in California, we always exchange the new and current news of our families...and then we always lapse into telling each other the old stories of the family...

Sometimes we are both hysterical on the phone, because these stories are so funny and we are both laughing so hard...As my aunt Helen says when she is referring to her and my dads relatives..."They were all nuts" And then she adds, that she and my dad and I have not fallen too far from that nutty tree...

Thats a lovely story...it made me cry...seeing ones child attain a goal, which they so badly want, is heartwarming...

Also, a really nice road trip that they took, instead of flying...a road trip can at times be trying, depending on who you are in the car with, or the road trip can draw the family close together...

That must have been something to see...Mama Higgins crying and Papa Higgins jumping up and down...one very happy, happy family...

The Receptionist

There's nothing worse than a snotty doctor's receptionist who insists you tell her what is wrong in a room full of other patients. I'm sure a lot of you have experienced this, and here's the way one old guy handled it.

An 86 year old man walked into a crowded doctor's office. As he approached the desk, the receptionist said, "Yes sir, what are you seeing the doctor for today?"

"There's something wrong with my penis," he replied.

The receptionist became irritated and said, "You shouldn't come into a crowded office and say things like that."

"Why not? You asked me what was wrong and I told you," he said.

The receptionist replied, "You've obviously caused some embarrassment in this room full of people. You should have said there is something wrong with your ear or something and then discussed the problem further with the doctor in private."

The man walked out, waited several minutes and then reentered.

The receptionist smiled smugly and asked, "Yes?"

"There's something wrong with my ear," he stated.

The receptionist nodded approvingly and smiled, knowing he had taken her advice. "And what is wrong with your ear, Sir?"

"I can't p*ss out of it," the man replied.

LOL.. I understand.. My sister was our family historian. She was 17 years older than me, and of course knew all the family history.. Us kids always wanted her to make tapes or videos of all her knowledge and all her salty jokes and songs.. She was a riot, and we sure miss her. She was the matriarch and so many things disappeared with her..

Our family sounds a lot like yours.. My Mom's family had many fisherman and origanlly came from Nova Scotia, by way of Germany.. My Dad's were pisspots from England.. lol
