Combatants with no definable uniform I suspect that, if anything, he's being questioned with greater regard for his "rights" than he is due.
To: OrthodoxPresbyterian
Padilla falls under 2,
he's a traitor for betraying his country by aiding and conspiring with the enemy.
He is a Combatant because he had plans to carry out a terrorist attack against this country.

They passed a joint resolution exactly like the WOT joint resolution. Wait for some distinction without a difference to be trotted out.
To: Kevin Curry
No, they don't matter to sneakypete. You are a liar.

That will be the day this whole discussion becomes academic, and Muslims start to become extinct. As sad and wasteful as the reality of that fact is, it's still a fact, and as are all facts, it's logical. I cry for this Nation, and for Humanity.

We Calvinists, now... we think that Men are naturally evil, --- As the Dixie Chicks or your local mechanic would say, "there's your trouble". 1111 posted on 6/16/02 10:56 PM Pacific by Senator PardekSee your "Dixie Chicks", raise you "Metallica".
Truths to you are lies to me
One man's Heaven, is another Man's hell.
"Man is naturally Good... we just have to get the right people in charge." -- See under heading, "Every Tyranny in the History of Man", Encyclopedia Humanica.
Calvinist America being the sole exception in the modern age.

Saudi Arabia is the obvious answer No. The terrorists are dispersed into the populations of a number of civilian populations throughout the world.
It's a good thing our President isn't so simple.
To: Our Descendants
For a wartime President, Bush seems awfully busy with giving away more of the taxpayers money to targeted welfare constituencies. What do you want to bet that there is NO proof of citizenship required for this subsidized housing program? To require citizenship of course would be mean and exclusive.

They passed a joint resolution exactly like the WOT joint resolution. Those resolutions gave both Jefferson and Bush the authority to assume their war powers as CIC. YOU are now spinning one resolution as constitutional while declaring the WOT resolution constitutionally unsound. 1118 posted on 6/16/02 11:01 PM Pacific by TexasforeverI'm saying, with Ron Paul, that an "Affirmation of War" gives us a lot of grounds for cleaning up Constitutional loose-ends. "Detainees"? "Combatants"? Etc...
"Authorization of Force", doesn't.

Saudi Arabia is the obvious answer, but it ain't gonna happen. 1120 posted on 6/16/02 11:02 PM Pacific by sneakypeteGiven that 15 outta 19 of the 9/11 terrorists were Saudis, I am tempted to agree.
Don't expect agreement from the other side.

But it is not orchestrated by Bush as it appears you are implying. If you thought that was what I was implying, you are mistaken. I've never said that,or even thought that. Do I think he would take advantage of a situation to further his agenda? You bet your butt! So would any other politician. That's just the way life and politics works. This ain't the same thing as saying or thinking he was a part of it,though. It had never even occured to me that anybody would think this.

Twisting, twisting, twisting the night away... 1117 posted on 6/16/02 10:59 PM Pacific by RoscoeI'm dancing on a disco-floor of black and white squares, Ros.
Itsa a good thing. The dancers know where to step.

I see you just can't bring yourself to concede. There are very good reasons for NOT formally declaring war. Those Detainees would be immediate POWs that have full Geneva convention protections along with the requirement that they be released at the end of hostilities. Do you want them released? I want them to rot on GITMO.
To: mrsmith
Congressional act in support of President Adams' undeclared war: An Act Further to Protect the Commerce of the United States July 9, 1798.The term "affirmation of war" appears nowhere in the act. Watch him pretend that it does.

See your "Dixie Chicks", raise you "Metallica".See your "Metallica", raise you "Rush".
There are those who think that they were dealt a losing hand,
The cards were stacked against them; they weren't born in Lotusland.
All preordained
A prisoner in chains
A victim of venomous fate.
Kicked in the face,
You can't pray for a place
In heaven's unearthly estate.
You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill;
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose freewill.
