Fort Ross was started by about 25 Russians, along with some Inuit, I believe...They arrived in 1812...Primarily they were there in California to hunt the sea otter for the pelts...the fort was really pretty extensive, with lots of buildings for living and working and there is also a church....

Eventually the sea otter became more and more scarce...the Russians did try agriculture and farming, but it was a failure due to the damp, windy, chlly, and foggy conditions along the coast...

Eventually by about 1841, or so, the Russians left...

Many of the buildings at the fort today, are not the original buildings, but reconstructions...but I believe there are many original artifacts left behind..

Its really an interesting place to visit...

so the russians were there to hunt
that was their settlement
then they abandoned it
they were really fur trappers I guess
