It could be of the salt, but kind of doubt it.. They get the salt by flooding shallow ponds with sea water. Then let the sun evaporate the water. Go in with bulldozers and frontloaders, scoop it up and transport it to a dock, from which it is transported to an island off shore. There it is loaded on to ocean going ships for transport all over the world...This is a really dry part of Baja know as the Vizcaino Desert...So I would guess there just isn't enough rain to grow anything.....
