SAN ANTONIO -- A man who skipped town the day he was scheduled to go to trial in a 14-year-old murder case died this week in a head-on collision with an 18-wheeler in South Texas, officials said.
Robert Estrada, 38, veered his 1994 Mazda into the path of a truck just north of Laredo early Tuesday, officials said. Monday, Estrada was set to go on trial for the fatal drive-by shooting of Rene Morales on April 1988.
Estrada faxed a note Monday morning to District Court Judge Bert Richardson saying he would be late to court. "I am running a little late, but don't give up," Estrada wrote. "I will see you very soon."
