He is concerned for your well-being

While it is gratifying to know that nully has concern, he need not think that his concern will be accepted as a substitute for a monthly check. Uncle Sam and I will be waiting ...

I do want to avoid fast food joints as much as I can... but I don't want to be shocked by prices on menus, either. Little local cafes are becoming rare - hardly any can be found in Waco. There are George's and Beverly's for giant chicken fried steaks.

I believe you will be most pleasantly surprised by the quality, quantity, and the inexpensiveness of small town America dining. Those folks HAVE to put out great chow, or the locals won't go there, and there's no Interstate idiots who need their Whopper fixes. Many small towns have no chain restaurants at all. The demographics are not there, and the population of cretins who would willing poison themselves are not there either.

You'll have a fantastic time eating in small town America - bon apetit.

I feel the same way. If I am paying serious money for food, I want to beable to relax and enjoy it, not just make it a pit stop on a trip.

'Road Food' seems to be out of print, but if you enter 'Road Food' as a search on Amazon it now seems to be a whole catagory with a bunch of books on the subject.

I have absolutely no comment

Rural Roots,
Gay rodeo athletes
revisit lives they left

" People think [a gay rodeo] is a bunch of sissies trying not to be, and that's really not the case," said Helander.

In addition to the classic roping events and bronco and bull riding ... The goat dressing event ... required two-person teams to dash 50 yards to a tethered goat, flip up its hind legs and strap a pair of bikini briefs on it.

ROTFL! And the winner gets to have a night of wild sex romance with the goat, right?

Not a recomended Road Food attraction

Fingertip finds its way into rice ball
SENDAI (Kyodo) A woman found a 1-cm-long fingertip in a rice ball bought at a Lawson Inc. convenience store in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture.
The manufacturer apparently failed to recover the tip after a plant worker cut a finger, the Sendai municipal government said Saturday.

Valerie, I still can't remember the name of the book I mentioned earlier but I did find several that aappear to be real good options including the one Swerve suggested. Roadfood. At Amazon you might want to check out, Backroad Buffets & Country Cafes : A Southern Guide to Meat-And-Threes & Down-Home Dining, by Don O'Briant. Also, Southern Food by John Egerton. I found a fairly good web site that list southern restaurants by state. Dixie Dining. I don't recall hearing you mention if Nashville is on your itinerary but if so I have a couple of wonderful suggestions for you. One of them has yummy fried chicken, biscuits made from scratch that will make you weep they are so good. They make their own homemade preserves and smoke their marvelous country ham they serve with redeye gravy. It is all to die for. It is a little dump of a place at the start of the Natchez Parkway and it is a good idea to have a reservation most days.

Wow, I didn't know that either. Doesn't He look young ? It appears she has been on a diet and that it worked. LOL. She has such a wonderful voice but it sure seems she may be destined for a very turbulent life.

Thanks, Darlin'. I'm not sure if we'll drive through Tennessee or not, it's one of the options on the return route. It will depend on how much of a hurry we are in to get home on our way back -- how thin our sanity is stretched by then *LOL*

Val, if you will check out the Waco places on this list you will be able to judge it's quality. Their choices in Houston are all good I know.

Thank you Darlin' this is a dandy site.

"Attempts to reach a company spokesman for Amtrak were unsuccessful Saturday."

That's a standard government answer. Maybe they should be merged with INS. A classic.
