Publisher's Summary

Stephen Wolfram's

A New Kind of Science

Dramatic Discoveries from one of the
Worlds Most Respected Scientists

This long-awaited work from one of the world's most respected scientists presents a series of dramatic discoveries never before made public. Starting from a collection of simple computer experiments--illustrated in the book by striking computer graphics--Stephen Wolfram shows how their unexpected results force a whole new way of looking at the operation of our universe.

Wolfram uses his approach to tackle a remarkable array of fundamental problems in science, from the origins of apparent randomness in physical systems, to the development of complexity in biology, the ultimate scope and limitations of mathematics, the possibility of a truly fundamental theory of physics, the interplay between free will and determinism, and the character of intelligence in the universe.

Written with exceptional clarity, and illustrated by nearly a thousand original pictures, this seminal book allows scientists and nonscientists alike to participate in what promises to be a major intellectual revolution.

Stephen Wolfram was born in London and educated at Eton, Oxford, and Caltech. He received his Ph.D. in theoretical physics in 1979 at the age of 20, having already made lasting contributions to particle physics and cosmology. In 1981 his work was recognized by a MacArthur award. In the early 1980s he made a series of classic discoveries about systems known as cellular automata, which have yielded many new insights in physics, mathematics, computer science, biology, and other fields. In 1986 he founded Wolfram Research, Inc. and began the creation of Mathematica, now the world's leading software system for technical computing and symbolic programming, and the tool that made A New Kind of Science possible. Over the past decade Wolfram has divided his time between the leadership of his company and his pursuit of basic science.

Last flashback...Sorry non Who-philes!

Doctor is being blackmailed into stealing food from a dispenser on a well surveilled upstairs complex in some megalopolis...There is ONLY one way to get any Time Lord, Much LESS Tom Baker's Doctor to do ANYTHING...HOSTAGES!!!

(As an Aside I swear the grubby, paunchy grizzled scavenger types they picked to be the blackmailers looked suspiciously like any 8 guys cruising a Washington Arms Collector's Gun SHOW, at any given moment...easiest casting job ever!...) The Trolls gave the Doctor a time limit to get the food back to the "basement" or the little buckskin bisquit gets shived...Welll Times up...No Doctor, No Food...15 to one odds...They start closing in to make good on their threat to the Doc... She backs into a corner, Draws her dirty but undoubtedly RAZOR SHARP knife, braces, and practically grunts out(still in a perky English accent, never seen it done better)

"Before I die here, I shall see this room ANKLE DEEP in BLOOD!"

Troll chieftain looks at his white faced band of not so merry cutthroats and announces..."We'll give him another half an hour". Audible sigh of relief from everyone MALE in the room...Hope it was as good for you people as it was for me to retell it;-D

"Tom Baker's fourth season of Doctor Who marked a change from the exploration of Gothic horror. The unusually satirical "The Sun Makers" finds the Doctor, Leela (Louise Jameson), and robot dog K9 involved in a struggle against capitalism-gone-mad at the outer limits of the solar system. With Earth exhausted, mankind has colonized Pluto and lives in six vast "megropoli" lit by artificial suns. These colonies are run by the Company, with drugged human "work units" slaving simply to pay their funeral expenses. There are plenty of potshots at overzealous taxation and bureaucracy--Robert Holmes wrote the story as revenge after a frustrating audit--and splendidly theatrical performances from Richard Leech and Henry Woolf as the ultra-capitalist villains. With no monsters and little conventional horror, Baker is in fine form in a briskly directed four-part comedy-thriller distinguished by its political edge."

Contains the classic Doctor line, given when he's trying to convince the oppressed workers to rebel against capitalism: "You have nothing to lose but your claims!"

A Latent Freeper found his outlet in low budget BBC SciFi... I wonder where he is now? Thanks again...KoTS...If you're ever in the PNW we must drink some beers and find somewhere to admire the female form and psyche...perhaps two places...

Doctor's farewell to Leela was unusually sentimental for the departure of a Companion..."I shall miss you, Savage". Now I get to see her on my profile every day! BR SS

If you'd like a selection of Leela images, check out the Leela gallery at the Dr. Who Archives. All the pictures expand, of course, if you click on them. They also have images of all the other companions, as well as other stuff.
