I have a friend in Georgia who thinks I am out of my mind because I will drive across country alone and just doesn't understand why it doesn't scare me to death. I am quite comfortable with it and find the experience very relaxing. This same person will fly to New York and ride the subways alone and I think she is crazy. No way would I do that!
I have heard other women say they would be scared to death to live in the country because they would be afraid of wild animals or of somebody sneaking up on them and nobody would be around to help them. Personally, I have found country folks to be some of the most observant of what's going on around them and help in a "crisis" is seldom far away. And it doesn't matter if they know you or not.
Having a lot of people around is certainly no guarantee of safety as some of the stories of crimes being committed in front of hundreds of witnesses and nobody helping testify to. Personally, when I am someplace where I am always hearing voices and traffic and sirens, I am unable to ever completely relax. I am far more confident when there is silence except for the sounds of the birds, crickets and cicadas, the frogs and geese, the wind in the trees and rain on the roof. Others are restless when there is no noise. Go figure.
