He was saying that the priests, bishops, cardinals, etc., in the Catholic Church should be standing for a -0- tolerance policy as it relates to pedophilia or homosexual activities rather than falling back to an act having to be horrorific or notorious!
Apparently there were leaders in the Mormon Church who had gone to court to be character witnesses for a 20+ year old man who killed his 2-month old son because he cried! This bastard hung his baby with one of his socks, he hit the baby in the face with pillows, and finally grabbed the baby by the scruff of the neck and shook him--apparently the shaking severed the spinal cord!! And he willingly told the police all about what he did to the baby.
The Bishops and Deacons or Ward Leaders--whatever their titles were, in court testimony talked about what a great missionary this guy was, that he would be the last person they suspected of child abuse, oh--at the end of his missionary service, one of the families had wanted to give him a piano because he was such a good person, yada yada yada.
The callers to the show were a real mixed bag--as you can imagine. I would say the majority were concerned about the baby, though there were those defending the actions of church leaders--both Mormons and Catholics. There was even a former judge who praised the killer.
The talk show host finally said something along the lines of he has a brother that he loves dearly who is married and has a son; that there is nothing he wouldn't do for brother--EXCEPT AND UNLESS AND UNTIL he killed his nephew--he said the last thing he would be doing is going to court and talking about his good qualities in the hopes the jurors would go easy on the murderer!
The host was really po'd because the Mormon Church really promotes family values and uses that as a selling point--like the 'its for the kids' bunch. One of the callers said the Mormon Church apparently doesn't care as much for the kids as they do for someone who is already paying their tithes to the Church! There were a number of bitter callers.
I was really surprized to hear this emanating from Salt Lake City!!!
