Not Catholic...but your scenario seems a bit doubtful Not Catholic either, and I am sure they will survive, but the billion dolar hit seems pretty certain just on the suits that are already filed, and based on the amounts awarded in suits that have already been tried.

One of the things that really concerns me is that there will be opportunistic people coming out of the woodwork leveling accusations against priests. These people will have no concern for the reputation of the priest in question or of the impact on the church, but will only see the opportunity to cash in. It is already happening. I do not believe for one minute that all the new allegations out there are legitimate...just convenient. So how are they going to determine whether or not a claim is credible?
