I did not know this. Anyone else know any slang terms I should know about? Obviously, keep it clean.

Elvis' beloved mother Gladys dies at the age of 42 as did he. (I know somebody who was born in '42. Lucky guy! Wow!) Other than that it don't mean nothing!

Let's see.

420 means the 14 year old I just diagnosed as being four months pregnant.

It means that the 17 year old who is on her own will have to keep living with her crippled grandmom until she is old enough to leave school (her mom and her mom's latest in a string of men friends is toting all the time).

It means the funeral next week (oops, toting caused poor judgement-- that car wasn't there a few minutes ago)

And it means Sarah is out of her pain pills again (her tote smoking boyfriend sells them on the street for stronger drugs).

And of course, next week the local rehab center has a new group coming in. A few just with alcohol; most of the others with mixed substance abuse: when marijuana wasn't enough, it's easy enough to buy meth from the same drug dealer.

I've only met one adult that doesn't know what 420 is. There's no way the marijuana is 4times as harmful as cigarette smoke. At least half of the chemicals in marijuana are anti-carcinogenic, meaning they reduce the chance of cancer, something that cigarette smoke defintely doesn't do. 420 is not declared as "The Hippie New Year", if you smoke on 4/20 it doesn't make you a hippie. In the movie Pulp Fiction, not all the clocks are set to 4:20, notice that when the kid gets the watch, it's set to 9:00, and stating that "Marijuana smokers familiar with the symbol picked up on it" wouldn't you be implying that you too are a marijuana smoker because only marijuana smokers familiar with the symbol would recognize it right? No one in their right mind uses 420 as a code to speak about marijuana, a lot of people know what 420 stands for, regardless what your article states. What makes you say that 420 has been a sacred symbol for 30years when you don't even know what it symbolizes. You ask the question many times to your readers but never once state what it actually symbolizes. The risks and repercussions of marijuana are simply getting high and doing stupid things, yes your lungs will get a little black if you actually smoke it, but the risk of getting cancer or any diesease from it is very slim. No records show of anyone getting cancer or any kind of diesease from marijuana. There's other ways to consume this "drug" without even the lung factor, i.e. eating and vaporizing. In actuallity, marijuana is a natural medical drug. It helps you sleep better and is a natural pain killer. It also helps control nausea, spasms, depression, migraines, anorexia, anxiety, etc. Marijuana helps the pains and conditions (mental and physical) of multipule things such as cartilage deficiency, multiple sclerosis, chronic Hepatitis C, Lupus, inflamed esophagus, Chrone's disease, fiber mialga, stomach ailment, arthritis, thoracic outlet syndrome, terminal cancer, tourettes, bipolar disease, ovarian cancer, obsessive compulsive disorder, glaucoma, AIDS, etc. THS, one of the main chemicals found in marijuana has been proven to actually shrink tumors, and almost get rid of them. Apparently your whole article was a poorly researched and biased "statement".

According to Steven Hager, editor of High Times, the term 420 originated at San Rafael High School, in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking wiseacres who called themselves the Waldos, who are now pushing 50. The term was shorthand for the time of day the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur, to smoke pot. Intent on developing their own discreet language, they made 420 code for a time to get high, and its use spread among members of an entire generation. While our teens feel that they know something we don’t, you can let them in on the fact that it was your generation that came up with the numbers.
