Slang Words That Mean
Slang Words That Mean "Good"
by Lore Fitzgerald Sjöberg

Cool
It's interesting that the word "cool" has survived so long as a slang term in a world where MTV introduces a new expression of exuberance every three days. (The latest: "That's so elkhound!") Not only that, it has essentially the same meaning it's always had: laid-back, unruffled, and free of visible signs of venereal disease. A

Bad
Boy, people loved this one. It was an easy way for eighties sitcoms to fill space between commercials for Super Nintendo: have the hip, wisecracking, bandana-wearing ethnic youngster explain to the befuddled father figure that "bad" means "good"! Such hilarity! Whee! This one lost favor when it became associated with Michael Jackson in skintight bondage gear. Just like Macaulay Culkin did. D

Phat
Do the street toughs supposedly responsible for recent slang really care all that much about whimsical spelling? I can't help but suspect that the "ph"--if not the whole deal--was dreamed up by the same slick-haired record exec who gave us Kris Kross. C

Awesome
This one stopped being used by actual youths about 1991, but for some reason it's stuck in the heads of ad writers, who use it to describe anything from the latest Pokemon movie to blue frosting. For fun, mentally substitute the original meaning of the word: "New Tropical Berry Blast instills one with a sense of awe!" C-

Gear
"Fab" was also nice, but I like "gear" because it's so inexplicable. "Gear"? As in "We can't get on the freeway because my Honda won't go past second..."? For maximum effect, this word must be pronounced with a bad Liverpudlian accent. B

Most say pizza

In college I had a roommate from Germany who pronounced "pizza" this way. After a few months it rubbed off on me and I started saying it!

We would go to a crowded place and most would say, "There are a lot of people here." He would say, "There are people all and everywhere." That one rubbed off on me as well and I still use it.

Good ol' Nils corrupted my english in ways I am still trying to correct.

Ah, good ol' Gwen. I saw No Doubt play at a dive bar when I was in college. It was before they hit it big. I was drunk and I kept trying to cop a peak up Gwen's catholic school-girl skirt she was wearing. When I finally did, I was disappointed to see she had on biking shorts underneath.

While the night remains hazy, I must have filled out a mailing list because the band started sending me all kinds of stuff --concert dates, album and t-shirt info, etc.

When "I'm Just a Girl" broke on MTV, I was like, "Hey! I know those guys! They send me mail!" I wish I had saved some of it.

It's like this; get onto any Unreal or Half-Life server, and you will run into what I call "game-slang". Some basic translations are this:

5 = S
3 = E
7 = T
0 = O
4 = A

and so on. Sometimes vowels will be left out altogether. It changes quite quickly. So my statement was:

Check out my elite skills, yo!

I call it nerdbonics.

Gwen sure looks different now..

Much better IMHO. She went from geeky to hot. Gavin Rossdale is one lucky dude.

Plus, I gotta give Gwen mad props for doing her part to popularize the "low-cut hip-huggers with exposed thong underwear" look that has become fashionable these day.

Okay, here are two more:
"The Living End" (Circa 1970),
and "The Bees' Knees" ( circa 1920)
