Loved the story about the army sandwiches meant to last a lifetime...I, personally have boxes and boxes full of MREs(Meals Ready to Eat), that the hubby has brought home from his days in the Reserves...every meeting they hand out these MREs for the soldiers, as the army is supposed to supply their meals while they are on duty...sometimes they have hot kitchens, for their meals, but for those meals where they dont have a kitchen, they hand out these MREs

The hubby does not care for them, and usually just goes to a restaurant, or just does not eat....but he always brings his MREs home...

So we have got several boxes loaded with MREs...I guess we are saving them in case of a war, or some sort of catastrophe, which occurs, and the stores dont have food, or save them for our very old age, and we dont care what we are eating...

In all fairness tho, MREs really do have a lot in them, as I have opened a few up, and we have actually sampled them...most of them contain a main meal, of which there is an abundant variety(ham slice, chicken breast, hot dogs, pork chow mein, tuna casserole, beefsteak, vegetarian, etc)...along with the main meal, you usually get some sort of starch(rice, potato, noodles), a fruit(peaches, apples, pineapple, all in sauce), crackers, with peanut butter and jelly packets, a desert(cake, cookies, brownies) and sometimes they will throw in something extra like life savers, or skittles, or something else...and then there is the packet, containing, gum, tabasco sauce, salt, pepper, sugar, instant coffee, ice tea mix, matches, toilet paper...also a packet of hot chocolate, or a juice drink...and of course a portable flat heater, that you add water to, and it heats up and you can put your food inside...all in all, they pack a lot into those MREs, and one could surely survive on them...not gourmet or home cooked food to be sure, but nonetheless edible...

I know if you look in hunting and sports magazines, they always have a section where they sell MREs...because they do contain a lot of food, and are easy to prepare, and lightweight to carry, so for hunters and sportsmen, they are ideal...

I remember a while back some prison, in order to save money, was serving MREs to the prisoners for one meal a day...the prisoners were trying to claim 'cruel and unusal punishment' by being forced to eat MREs...Sean Hannity had someone from the dept. of corrections of his program, and Sean was going to sample the MREs...it was so funny to watch...it was probably the first time he had ever tasted an MRE and he was trying quite hard to smile as he was eating his MRE, and trying to say how tasty it was...you could tell he was lying...but hey, if MREs are good enough for the military troops, in a pinch, they are good enough for prisoners..
