That's where these popularized science articles fall down. It seems to be a journalistic tradition that some conclusion must be drawn, or some theory substantiated in every article. If they simply report the facts and leave theory to the scientists we will all be better served. Is it true that Neanderthals had human speech but spent their time in gossip rather than homeschooling the youths? Maybe we are directly descended after all.

My favorite was the article about the amazing techniques that the Eskimos used to survive in such a harsh environment. It claimed that these were developed gradually over hundreds of years. The author, true to an evolutionaty mindset, was apparently unable to realize that if they didn't have most of these techniques available from arrival in the area, they wouldn't have lived thru their first winter.
