About the State Boards ...

Posted on 03/27/2002 2:28:44 PM PST by John Robinson

I want to improve the per-state message boards as found here while reducing the total amount of program code (to support.)

My idea was to create topics in the News/Activism forum for each individual state and allow interested parties to subscribe to these topics. Example. My thought was that the state-level activism conducted on the per-state message boards would then be greatly enhanced... with the ability to create separate discussion threads, and all the other tools that are included in the standard forum package.

However, my idea has been met with much resistance and I would like to know exactly what the issues are. I first thought I merely didn't communicate my intentions clearly, but I'm not so sure that is the case now.

We're getting fewer locale posts in CA, since the new format auto-pings went up. It's a good thing.

For those who don't like spam-pings, is there a way to make a person ping-proof? I've seen no-ping requests. Could pings automatically return-- like blocked email? Perhaps a "ping-proof" under the spammed message could be clicked, and further pings blocked. Some here at FR, have NO interest in state issues, but maybe they will later, as this builds. Keep up the good work.

RE: posts from out of state-- should be identified.

This guy has hit the nail on the head.

To get more people subscribed to a locale perhaps you could also add notification like you do for topics: "you are not assigned to a locale, click here to subscribe". Question: my locale (Japan) already has a topic. Will it get a new locale topic, or will we be automatically subscribed to the Japan topic? I just returned from a month vacation and found the site changed. I stumbled across this thread by accident. Your intentions are good, but people can not read your mind or your intentions.

Got to lead them to the promise land, over and over and over again. chicaogfarmer

Mr. Glendening would do much better by forcing a complete privatization of Maryland's water systems. Sure, the cost would soar in times like these, with some people starting to smell like the occasional French native as they avoid showering, but we'd have us a water supply, with, one would hope, enough monetary incentive for people to develop it for agriculture and so on.

and then the question arises, how long will that topic remain on the sidebar at the present rate of new threads? I get upset, at what I call poachers, other state visitors posting in my state area. Most of them are worthless at best and spam at worst. There just happens to be an example of this on the SD board as we speak right at the top of the list.

South Dakota has been taking care of its own business, and frankly, I like it that way. If there is a SD relative post on the main board, someone sees it and posts a link, or if it is really important, we will get individually pinged by other state members, not the present "gang ping" who think it is important, and while we are on the subject of ping, I wish you could see the pings vs my posts or others to me. They are way out of proportion, and there ought to be a way of separating what I post and what returns to me from the thousands and thousands of pings that just muddy the water. I don't like the idea of having to control what ping lists I am on by mailing someone to be on or off their ping list.

I am not sure I like the idea of dual, triple, or multiple state membership. In fact the above poacher name refers to anyone posting stuff on someone elses state board. We have seen enough spam to know this is a bad idea IMHO. Real South Dakotans ought to be able to police their own board, and not be bothered having to police outsiders as well.

Just my humble opinion and thanks for the opportunity to sound off. You know I love FreeRepublic, the concept, the people who make it happen, and the Freepers, most of the improvements have been outstanding, in fact I was thinking just the other day, regarding beta testing of software, from an historical standpoint those who love to remember "the way it was" we could have reverse beta where each version of "freerepublic" software, would be available for use, seamlessly integrated with each other and with the present version, so those who like one over the other could stick with the old or new as they wish. Now how much trouble and bandwidth would that involve? It seems like things were so simple "in the beginning".

Too restrictive, the reason I don't think delphi or yahoo, is FreeRepublic. Open forum where we chose from the available rather than restricted to topics of choice from the get-go. Your own choices restrict you from the big picture so to speak. Of course the sheer number of posts has increased with the increase in membership, and that may be the dilemma.

and while we are at it, a profile, a flag, for everyone, but then it wouldn't be called FreeRepublic. It bothers me when I see a particularly vocal reply to someone from another who has been on the board for some length of time, yet for whatever reasons, has no state affiliation, nor bothered to post a profile, but then I remember, why it is called "FreeRepublic".

Why are we not being notified if there is discussion on the State boards?

John, I really miss the drop down destination menus. It was so much easier to move around forum, especially to get to the state forums.

I have had no problem getting use to the rest of the changes, I just miss the ease that we had in manuvering within site with the destination menu.
