The GUILD - 3/21/02 - Looking For Victory
March 21, 2002

Posted on 03/21/2002 3:39:09 AM PST by mountaineer

United States Army and Canadian soldiers look over the rugged Shah-e-Kot mountains as they search for caves or Taliban and al-Qaida fighters on the loose, 25 kilometers (15 miles) southeast of Gardez, Afghanistan. Hundreds of American and Canadian troops were lifted into the mountainous region at high altitude to search for and destroy any enemy they encounter. (AP Photo/Mikhail Metzel, Pool)

I have been wondering about your screen name - I couldn't tell if you were an Aggie's mom or an Aggie who is a mom. I take it from your comments today about a 5 yr old and a 16 mos old, that you are an Aggie who's a mom -- altho, it's NEVER too soon to raise your children to be Aggies. - E, Class of '77

OK, I just drug out the road atlas to see where W. VA is compared to Pittsburgh, thinking of W. VA as close to DC and not PA, but I see that if you live in the northern part of Byrdville, you aren't too far from Pitt (which I might add, screwed up my brackets last night w/their loss to Kent State). Of course I find that it is, logically, west of VA and nestled in amongst a host of other states. I had no idea it was so cosmopolitan. I once drove through W. VA to get to DC - it is very pretty.

Enjoy your day of celebration with the 6 yr olds - and remember to duck when they start throwing the ice cream at each other.

I can't say that I am not disappointed in Bush cauz I am. But mostly this thing scares me to death. If Congress and a President, any Congress and any president, can do this to the first amendment just think what they can do to the second amendment.

That being said, I am willing to wait and see how this all plays out. If the end game is that the Supreme Court strikes it down and we get a Republican Senate, then I will be okay with it.

You do realize, of course, that after everyone on FR settles down, they will get riled up again after the signing ceremony and it will all start over again.

Mimomasa's and mint juleps for all of us..

Oh my, daisyscarlett, that mint julep looks so good. I'm ready for the Derby! Only 6 weeks or so to go.

Thank you for the lovely flowers, they are a wonderful visual pick me up. My poor lilac tree began budding in January, it probably won't bloom this year.
The poor daffodils are probably destroyed as well, I can't see them now through the several inches of snow we received yesterday. Other than that, yippee, its Friday!

Mountaineer, I'm praying for your 6 year-old birthday experience.

I'll drink to that. But I'd like a Bloody Mary, if you don't mind. Preferrably from Wally's at Wrightsville Beach! :-)

I believe Bush has to SAY VERY CLEARLY that he believes parts of it are unconstitutional; but it won't ever go to the SC if it's not a bill. So he has no choice, IMO. He's been boxed in.

He TOLD them not to count on him to do their work. They just didn't listen because they ALL have agendas of their own.

Bright women who are not beautiful have never had a shot at television news. I think Candy Crowley does a wonderful job but she's had to fight for everything at CNN. And the woman at NBC who did the Juanita Broderick story does good work. I do think Ashley Banfield has done some excellent reporting from Syria, Pakistan, and this week, from Jordan. She seems to know how to package her reports to keep them informative, short and to the point. I think the women who do the financial market reports are bright and articulate, but they have to be.

Fox is one of the worst offenders -- I know all the FR men love Laurie Dhue (I call her Laurie "duh") but I don't think she has much between her ears besides her blue eyes (and I've gotten hammered for saying that before - I know all about how she was this star swimmer at UNC but I'm sorry, she always looks to me to be in a perpetual state of surprise.)

And it's the same with the men - Bryan Williams, Aaron Brown, and Shepard Smith have to be some of the dumbest & dullest people in television news. I do like Brit, Tony Snow and Freddie the Beatle, Barnes and even Mort Kondracke on occasion. I don't find O'Reilly too bright - loud, but not too bright, and Sean Hannity is a nice guy but he's no genius. Fortunately, Alan Colmes is not too much of a challenge. But most of the talking heads are just that - people who look good & who sort of know how to read - don't expect them to be able to converse.

Oh, and I really like Lawrence Kudlow and have grown to like the guy that plays opposite him (Jim?)- they are both really smart and my kind of guys - not the typical "lookers" but men who have so much to offer due to their brains and street smarts. They shoot straight whether you like it or not. I'd take that ANY day over good looks and vacuous heads.

Yes, they all have agendas of their own, and I think you are so right, he does have to stress that parts of this are unconstitutional. We have to change our game plan, that's all, not give up the game entirely. Hopefully, people are not so disgusted that they lose sight of what is of vital importance.

I think we should all meet down on Wrightsville Beach later today - we still have time to get to our respective airports and arrive in time for a leisurely late evening dinner and a round or two of drinks. I'll buy! (And then we can all go sailing at night right off the coast - oh man, I wish it was summer).

We're on the same wave length re those liked and disliked.....everyone! Brit's my all time favorite. You left out Bill Samond (sp?) and Charles Krauthamer. He's really incisive and erudite...brilliant psychiatrist as well as columnist and TV guest. He's wheelchair bound but can run intellectual circles around others less gifted.

I'm sure there are a whole lot worse places we could meet...

Stuck in Paradise between Wrightsville Beach and Topsail Island, NC . . .
