One of their problems is that they're mixing genres. Can you include Merle Haggard on a list with Madonna or Michael Jackson with Velvet Underground? I think they tried to come off as "edgy" and "in the know" but ended up leaving a lot of people scratching their heads.

No, I am serious...how do they define "cool?" Remember, at one time lots of stuff was "cool" that isn't now. Donna Summer, the Village People, and The Knack were once cool.
