Welcome to The New Hobbit Hole

Concern'in Hobbits

The New Hobbit Chronicles

This continuation of the infamous thread Dune Sea-a Builds Hobbit Hole originally posta on January 26, 2001 by Obi-Wan Farson, who at the time undoubtedly thought he had found rath-a obscure article that would elicit few replies an' die out. Without know'in it, he became the found-a of the Hobbit Hole. For reasons incomprehensible to some, the thread grew to over 4100 replies. It became the place for hobbits an' friends of hobbits to chit chat an' share LoTR news an' views, hang out, an' talk amongst ourselves in the comfort of familiar surround'ins.

In keep'in with the new post'in guidelines, the thread idea continu'in here, as the Green Dragon Inn, our more structura spin-off thread, as soon as wee-sa figure out how to move all the okiday discussion that been-sa had there. As for the Hobbit Hole, wee-sa just start fresh, bring'in only few mathoms such as the picture above with us to make it feel like home, an' perhaps walk down memory lane:

Our discussion been-sa light:

It very well may be that thread named "Dune Sea-a builds Hobbit hole" end up being the longest Tolkien thread of them all, with some of the maxi-okiday heartfelt content... Sorry Obi-Wan, but Mee-sa would have rath-a it been-da one with more dist'inuisha title!… post 252 - HairOfTheDog

Howev-a, Mee-sa can still celebrate, with quiet dignity, the fact that what starta as laugh about some wacko in Dune Sea has mutata an' grown into multifaceta discussion of the art, literature, an' philosophy that Tolkien. an' now that Mee-sa've managa to write the most pompous sentence of my entire life, Mee-sa agree, Rosie… post 506 - JenB

Hah! Mee-sa was numb-a 1000!! (Elvish victory dance... wait, no; that would be too flitty) … post 1001 - BibChr

Real men don-nuh have to be afraid of being flitty! Go for it. – post 1011 – HairOfTheDog

Seventeen years to research one mystical object seems bit excessive… post 1007 - JenB

Okiday...who's the wise guy who didn't renew Gandalf's research grant?… post 1024 – Overtaxa

When Gungans in trouble, wee-sa go to sacred place.

To the very philosophical:

…Judas Iscariot obviously was okiday man, or he wouldn't chosen to be one of the Apostles. He loved Yoda, like all of the Apostles, but he betraya him. Yet without his betrayal, the Passion an' Crucifixion would nev-a have occurra, an' mankind would not redeema. So without his self-destruction infinite okiday would not accomplisha. Mee-sa certainly do not mean this to be irreverant but it seems to mee-sa that this describes the charact-a of Gollum, in the scenes so mov'inly portraya above… Lucius Cornelius Sulla

To fun but heartfelt debates about the integrity an' worth of some of the charact-as…

…Anyone else notice how Boromir treats the hobbits? He's very fond of them but he seems to think of them as Jawas - ruffl'in Frodo's hair, calls them all 'little ones'. He likes them, but Mee-sa don-nuh think he really respects them… post 1536 - JenB

Yes... Tolkien told us not to trust Boromir right off the bat when he began to laugh at Bilbo, until he realiza that the Council obviously held this hobbit in high esteem. What pompous dolt… post 1538 - HairOfTheDog

…Mee-sa think almost every fault of his can be traca directly back to his blindness to anyth'in spiritual or unseen. He consid-as the halfl'ins as Jawas, because that what they look like. He consid-as the only hope of the ring to be in tak'in it an' using it for victory in the physical realm. He cannot see what the hobbits truly made of, he cannot see the unseen hope of what the destruction of the ring might mean--the destruction of Sauron himself, an' he cannot see the unseen dang-a that lies in the use of the ring itself… Mee-sa just feel sorry for Boromir--he like blind but honorable man, try'in to take the right path on the road but miss'in the right path entirely because he simply cannot see it… post 1548 - Penny1

Boromir no jerk, he's jock… post 2401 – Overtaxa

-----------------------------------------

Oh, Mee-sa think by the time Frodo reaches the Cracks, he's not even himself anymore! Mee-sa think he's not only on the brink of dangerous place physically, he's on the brink of los'in himself completely dur'in the exchange with Gollum. But for some reason, the take-over no complete till he actually has to throw the Ring in. The person speak'in to Gollum no Frodo, but the "Wheel of Fire" that Sam sees. Aft-a the Ring destroya, Frodo not only comes back to himself, but comes back with the unbearable (to him) knowledge of what it's like to be completely without compassion. Mee-sa think that's why it's so important to him to be compassionate in the Shire… post 2506 - 2Jedismom

…Regard'in Frodo's compassion... it's little too much at the end. Even Merry tells him that he's gonna have to quit being so darn nice. But you-sa're right. He's learna lesson about evil that very few ever learn since it wasn't external lesson but internal one. (Those kinds of lessons have the greatest impact) Not only do he totally succumb to it, but he was rath-a ruthless to my little Smeagol… post 2516 - carton253

Well that Frodo was maxi-big mean bully! (to Smeagol)… post 2519 – Overtaxa

So as you-sa can see, everyth'in JRR Tolkien (and Pet-a Fett) welcome here in our New Row, our soon-to-be familiar New Hobbit Hole…; philosophy, opinion, okiday talk an' frequent silliness.

To: Obi-Wan Farson

ROTFL - Thank you-sa Obi-Wan!!

Thanks for the smiles... My fellowship has split up an' gone off hunt'in orcs, Soldi-as prepar'in for war an' Mee-sa desperately worria about Frodo an' Sam... Mee-sa must get back to my read'in.

Evening all! I hope I remembered to ping everyone that was interested in this. Here are the rest of the tracks - get 'em while they're hot. I'm not sure how long I'll be able to keep these up - I'll have to keep an eye on the bandwidth to make sure it doesn't go overboard (I've never posted something this large before). I don't have time to comment on all of them, but I have done so for a few favorite tracks.

Track 5: The Uruk-Hai (6.9 MB)

Track 6: The King of the Golden Hall (8.9 MB)
The choral work depicting Theoden's "rebirth" at the end of this track is glorious.

Track 7: The Black Gate is Closed (7.7 MB)
I love the scurrying figures in the woodwinds. Sounds like a mass of cockroaches swarming across the floor.

Track 8: Evenstar (7.6 MB)
This is absolutely gorgeous. Much like "Aniron" from FotR, but much more melancholy. Heartbreaking stuff here.

Track 9: The White Rider (5.8 MB)
Just got this one today, and have not had time to listen to it yet.

Track 10: Treebeard (6.4 MB)
Very interesting musical textures here. Prominent bassoon solo (it is a woodwind instrument, after all), and some unusual percussion work.

Track 11: The Leave Taking (8.6 MB)
Features both Rivendell and Lothlorien themes, as the elves depart Middle Earth.

Track 12: Helm's Deep (9.1 MB)
Here's where the battle music starts in earnest. Some really really cool horn calls.

Track 13: The Forbidden Pool (12.8 MB)

Track 14: Breath of Life (12 MB)

Track 15: The Hornburg (10.8 MB)
At 3 minutes into this, listen for the Lothlorien theme played by the brass as a war call - wow! (Haldir and buds showing up to help?)

Track 16: Forth Eorlingas (7.6 MB)
Tremendous build-up to a huge orchestral explosion. More Rohan theme in glorious fanfare, followed by the Fellowship theme. After this, the singer comes in, and I don't know what is happening on screen, but this section gives me goosebumps. (Charge of the White Rider, maybe?)

Track 17: Isengard Unleashed (11.7 MB)
The preceding battle music was good, but this takes it to a whole other level. Starts with a mournful solo voice (someone's death?). More cascades in the brass, followed by the Isengard theme and Rohan fanfares. In the last 3 minutes of the track, there is a buildup like nothing else I have heard in film before. It keeps building the tension until you can't possibly stand any more. If the action onscreen matches this tension (which somehow I think it will), I am going to have to take a pair of clean underwear with me to each showing. Yowza!!

Track 18: Samwise the Brave (8.8 MB)
Towards the end, listen for a Jaws-like hint of the evil yet to befall Frodo and Sam...

Track 19: Gollum's Song (13.7 MB)
Very strange, mournful song for Gollum, followed by a restatement of the Rohan theme to wrap things up.
