I'm sure this has already been discussed before, but I didn't want to go digging through 39,000+ threads to find it...

So, what are your thoughts on Tom Bombadil? This is, I'm sure, an enigma that rivals the great Kirk vs. Picard debates of Trekkies, and could cause some strife, but..I'm a curious Hobbit...and am interested to hear what others think.

Immortal? Personification of Nature? Omnipotent Deity? Istari? Madman? Even more aloof and self-centered than the Elves? (random elf bash)! Or, some or all of the above?
