I will not comment on the symbolism of that picture which I guess all of you female posters will admire. He looks rather like a figure out of
Ivanhoe, which is deliberate, of course. I went to that horrid thread -- how could you mention it without a barf alert? I am sure that the skeptics, who think TS is a put-on, were correct.
I am glad I missed SNL for both reasons, Ian McKellen's over-the-top behavior, which I guess is not a surprise, seeing the audience for that show, and no LOTR skit either (probably they decided that the props would cost too much).

Re skipping the barf alert.... I did call it horrid after all! you were warned!
I watched his opening monologue, hoping for some LotR references, and decided I couldn't stomach it enough to watch the rest of the show.
I'm glad to know I didn't miss anything LotR-related.
