I'm trying to decide whether to take the day off and catch the first show or just go after work.

Last year I pre-purchased tickets and there were two people doing the same. On the Day of the Movie, I just walked in (no lines.) The theater was "pretty much" full...a few empty seats. I suppose I should tell you that this was a small theater (4 screens) in a college town on the last day of exams so the town's population was down about 20,000 to 30,000 people.

Me too. We have a VERY small theater (three screens, and the rooms don't hold many people), one show nightly if it's a long one, and can't pre-purchase. So either I wait in line from really early or we don't go the first night. Last year we ended up waiting in line for about an hour and a half (from right after I got off work until seven o'clock), but there may be even MORE of a line this year. There were quite a few people in line before us by the time we got there THIS time.
