I'm not sure what an overgrown caterpillar would see in a human female.

I believe that it was a reference to the covers of pulp science fiction magazines up until the middle 1950's, in which a favorite theme was some sort or other of Bug Eyed Monster (BEM) depicted ogling a scantily dressed human female. I never understood what they were supposed to DO with her, because of physical incompatibilities. Then, in the 1990's, we got our own BEM residing in the White House!

What a delightful expression, BEM. Although I figure it to be overly kind for the previous occupant of the White House.

I guess it could be applied also to some of the ruder folks that get on FR
