I think the expanse of it is the awesome thing. There is a trail that leads all the way from Capital Forest down the the ocean... all public and open.

And the Pacific Crest Trail extends down into California.

Probably this trail serves much the same purpose as the Appalachian trail, which runs from Maine to north Georgia (no mountains down here in Florida).
