But it is a joke right? - Come on... the Christopher Tolkien quote that he has run out of things to publish so he jumped on this? and the TV show "That Darned Hobbit?" and the action figures with magic toys? - I could almost believe it without that.

oh yeah, it's definitely a joke...the merchandise gives it away as such. But it's loosely based on fact, I think.
